So I guess that means the 200 million he was going to spend on Heyward will just go toward profits? Or maybe hot dog price reduction? Or bailing Matheny out of his bankruptcy? This is great to know.

I'd prefer they not make reactionary moves though. No sense in locking yourself in to long term deals with guys they didn't really covet to begin with. They tried and didn't get JHey or Price. No need to sign a Gordon or Davis or Upton just because they didn't get the other guys. Search for trade pieces or use the money next offseason. It sucks that they didn't get who they wanted through FA, but doubling down and signing one of the above guys doesn't really help and hamstrings them for future deals.

What are you working for Mo now or taking some of VB's happy pills? They need a bat and an arm or it's a potential 75 win season.

Trades require players and free agents hurt profit so I would much rather them take the free agent approach. Gotta go find my happy pills fa la la la la

I have confidence in Mo and his ability to find players. The Cardinals will find their bat and their arm in due time. We were a NLCS team before J-Hay and we will be after him. How quickly we forget that we actually benched him for a while last year. The Cubs look good on paper but in reality they haven't won anything yet. We beat ourselves in the NLDS against them. Let's see how they do with enormous expectations. I say at the end of the day...They are still the Cubs. I think our line-up is still pretty solid. They had a phenomenal run at the end of the season. Let's see if they can keep that going next year. I say they are the new Washington Nationals of MLB. Ducky....you can feel free to switch sides and become a Cubs fan. I'm sure they have a board for you to post on.

I'm pushing to maximize our chances against the Cubs by spending some of the freakin money they are sucking off of the 3.5 million fans. If you want to sit tight as Yadi, Holliday and Waino get another year older that's your problem. Over/under on GRICHUK's trips to the DL is 2.

I think they will spend some money. I do agree that this roster is getting older and that the Cubs appear to be getting better. I think we will sign someone of significance and possibly make a big trade before Spring Training. I think Mo is bluffing. I was kidding about the Cubs fan thing. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Haha. We need an innings eater to replace Lynn. I really like to see people with birds on the bat hit the ball really hard also. I hope you are right.

The Cards are in a position where marginal spending has a lot of value.

But that doesn't mean the current crop of FA are the right guys to spend it on - I wonder what is out there in the trade market.

I think Holliday comes back strong. His 5 year avg before being hurt was good. If he is even on the lower side of that he'll help quite a bit. .275 with 18 HRs and 80 RBIs would be nice. He avg better than that every year until getting hurt. No reason to think he can't be in that neighborhood again. Being in the last year of a contract never hurts either.

I think that's far too optimistic on Holliday - looking at the 5 year average for a guy in his mid-30's is wishcasting. Matt Holliday of 2016 is a vastly different player than even the Matt Holliday of 2012. 4 years is a lot of aging for a ballplayer in their 30s. Matt is now old, slow, absolutely a brutal defender, and injury prone.

That's why I said the low side of his averages. He's never been a great defender and of course he has to stay healthy. But he can certainly help the offense if he has a decent year.

I don't think Holliday is a bad guy. And he has certainly been a good hitter over his career, but right now he is handcuffing the team. He limits who STL can sign and their flexibility in moving players around. Coming off the injury and the no trade status really hurts.

They have the money to buy or trade for a bat. If Holliday doesn't produce he can be benched if doesn't want to be traded. Why pay him to hurt the team when you can pay him to stay out of the way. I hope he hits like a mad man but you don't HAVE to play just because he's there. They let the innings eater go to the Cubs when they could have paid what he wanted for 2 years and still had him pretty cheap for the 3 years total.

The contract is almost over. If the Cards have to bury him, hopefully they will do so.

Keep telling yourself it's still the same Cubs TG34. Tell yourself that every night before bed, if it will help you sleep better.

Molina had a 2nd surgery on his hand. The Cardinals now say they (hope) he is ready for opening day. Hope is not a strategy. Since Oscar died in that car wreck the Birds have been snake bitten. Sooner or later they are going to have to shore up an aging team. Not enough young guys to go around.

Martinez - shoulder issue.
Lynn - T John
Waino - repaired Achilles
Garcia - you know
Wacha - faded in second half
Reyes - Pot suspension
Lyons-Cooley: Marginal prospects
Gonzalez - injury plagued 2015.

Am I forgetting anyone?
