Mo has put together quite a team

And on the other side of Chicago

The White Sox

20 losses in a row.
60 games below .500
1-12 vs. Minnesota Twins.
8-34 vs. AL Central
(.190 winning percentage)

But they won the series vs Marmol.

Quite a team that is basically stuck in baseball hell. They are going to miss the playoffs, but they will do well enough this year to give the mirage of progress from last year. So they will do just a couple tweaks in the offseason and sign a couple more older pitchers. And then again try to sell the fans on the fact that they are attempting to compete. But hey look on the bright side, they are way better than the White Sox.

Saw the Memphis Redbirds last week. Currently below .500, so not much help coming. Bats were dead. Nolan Gorman was 0-4 with 4 strikeouts. Just miserable. I was impressed by one of the young pitchers, Quinn Matthews, until he ran out of gas.

Mo is gone after next season. Bloom will be promoted to his role. GM will also be gone. 2025 will be another lost year during the transition. Guessing Marmol is safe for two years. What a sad franchise the Cards have become. Hope Bloom can right the ship.

Honestly, Mozeliak is one of the least likable executives in all of sports. I don’t understand him hanging around another year.

It makes no sense. Lets keep around a guy who has been a failure for one more go around and then promote someone else. This is plan a team uses that has been successful over the last little while. Not a team that has failed

He inherited the best organization in baseball and it has slowly deteriorated to being a sad situation with a bleak future.

Matheny 3 playoff appearances, won 115 games more than lost, 21 playoff games won
Shildt 3 playoff appearances, won 53 more games than lost. 4 playoff games won
Marmol 1 playoff appearance, won 6 games more than lost, 0 playoff wins

Matheny ran off bc wasn't making more LCS or WS, Shildt power struggle of some sort, but we keep the current. No real shaking of the front office. I guess at least ballpark village is full!

If they salary dump Gray, Helsley, Contreras and Arenado but keep Mikolas, I am all in for a Jan 6 style riot at BPV.

I cant see them going that far. But I am curious to see what they do to reduce spending at the ML level.

I don't think Marmol survives next year. No way in hell he's Bloom's choice. A very telling this is the 5 yr contract. Bloom had them over a barrel, and he knew it. I honestly think the team will be up for sale prior to spring training. BDWJr has OBVIOUSLY lost some heat on his fastball. First time I'd seen him speak publicly in a long time. He's slipping. I know, he's 80ish, but that is a Biden/Trump situation going on there. BDW3 won't want to do this w/o his besty/boyfriend MO. I also think that's why Bloom was able to command the deal, he knows what is coming. New ST facility in Jupiter is another marketable asset as well.

They'll be AWFUL in 2025 unless Helsley, Contreras, Nado, and Grey net them something that turns into MLB ready YOUNG productions (see 2024 Tigers). Might not get 2M in attendance. All of this hinges on Blooms ability to get assets in return and staff that can actually coach and develop youth. That has been a glaring problem. This needed to happen 5-8 yrs ago. The BS hedging that has gone on the last few yrs cost them yrs on the rebuild. All on MO. And btw, if he's still truly in charge in 2025...good lord. BenFred said it right, that's like a surgeon leaving a scalpel inside you and that same surgeon getting the chance to operate again and remove it.

He and the Dewitts are completely tone deaf, but this is just them not having dead money on the books.

That's exactly what they're going to do...Save this post...and it's what they should do if truly resetting.

Herrera/Pages
Gorman
Sagesse
Winn
Donovan
Burleson
Noot
Walker
Baker/Herrera

Sprinkle in some Victor Scott and that other CF'er that can't hit and they'll hope like hell whatever they netted from the salary dump has a piece or two that surprises them, ala the Tigers this year. But make no mistake, the talent that starts 2025 will resemble the late 80's pre TLR early 90s Birds. Maybe minus all the cocaine though.

Herrera can hit. If he can play first or DH he will be effective. Give Baker a shot. Get Walker out of the outfield before he hurts more teammates. I was looking at a minor league box score the other day and Gorman had gone 0-4 with 4 Ks.

that looks horrible. I want no part of that.

It's something close to what you're going to get, and it's needed. It's the only way they're going to rebuild. MO hedged for far too many years. Trying to piece together low-hanging fruits to remain competitive. MO is the ultimate answer if you want to spend top 1/3 money and finish "around" .500 most years.

I'd say Bloom, if MO gets the hell out of the way, has at least a puncher's chance of returning enough ready or close enough to ready, young talent to catch lightning in a bottle and be competitive in 2025. That is, if MO gets out of the way and they actually do liquidate the big contracts (Nado, Contreras, Grey) and get something for market value assets like Helsley (small contract, big upside).

No way MO gets out of the way.
That's what I'm afraid of. BenFreds article was spot on. Letting MO attempt to be the solution is like hiring the same lawn care company that killed your grass to reseed or scheduling the same surgeon to remove a scalpel he left in you on the previous surgery.

I was at that game in Memphis and had commented about it at the time. Gorman looked clueless and totally hapless.
