MLB moves into 21st century. 3R will have a cow.

Now automate the K zone, put a pitch clock up, and shave about an hour off the game time.

Why not just put a pitching machine out there and make it throw whatever you want and how hard you want?

How do you go from getting balls and strikes correctly and making pitchers throw in a certain amount of time...to a pitching machine? There's literally no correlation.

I said nothing about the balls and strikes but are we just going to make every sport into a machine game? Why do they need a gadget to call pitches? It's worked just fine the other way forever. They already have little cards in they hat to look at. If they use the gadget for a pitcher and catcher I assume the infielders have it too?
Basketball games take forever now because they review so many calls while the teams get an unlimited amount of timeouts and many of them are in the last couple of minutes when the players get to huddle up with their coach and save their timeouts because of it. THAT rule has to change so the players have to stand across the floor from their coach while a review is done.

The way things have worked for quite a few years is someone in the dugout signals the catcher, who then gives a series of signals and the pitcher gawks at him. If someone is on second they have to give more fake signals and the real signal. Sometimes they get mixed up and have to call time out and conference. This change will eliminate all of that. It should speed things up. It has nothing to do with reviews.

20 years ago in HS football teams either had the QB run to the sideline every freakin play or they had to send messenger players in every play. Things have evolved and teams are now running 2-3 times more offensive plays than they used to. It’s the same damn concept. You just enjoying complaining.

NO, they give a signal whether or not to throw over, NOT what pitch to throw. One pitcher used the gadget the other day then the next one didn't? Yadi is NOT doing it. Now what about the infielders getting the right sign? They kinda need to know. If it's so great why not make everybody do it?
I was talking about reviews in BASKETBALL that gives the teams a free timeout every time they do it. All part of the great tech age.

Yes. This is a baseball board and we are talking about a baseball signaling technology that teams can use if they want. And you start talking about basketball reviews. Irrelevant and silly. The baseball tech will not slow the game down. Good lord.

I e never understood the need to take one argument and present a completely different topic to explain why it’s ok. Here’s the thing, it hasn’t worked forever. Now is forever, and interest in baseball is plummeting. And the tech that they’re using hasn’t been around forever to use. Had it been around 100 yrs ago, I’d bet they’d use it. Things evolve. Baseball has to do things to evolve. Using tech to speed up the game is a simple solution…And you’re exactly right, basketball has a problem too. But that has squat to do with baseball. But basketball had a bigger problem when blown calls were costing teams games. Just think, had this kind of tech been available in 85 the Birds would likely have one more World Series ring. Stuff like this is a no brainer.

Then why not make them all do it to speed up the game? Why let them pick and choose? When they start using the automatic strike zone stuff will the pitcher or catcher be able to say no I don't want it for my game?

I literally envision you laying on your back kicking and screaming as you type. If the Cardinals are dumb enough to allow Yadi to dictate using something that obviously helps them, that's on them.

And no, they won't. That's obviously a stupid question.

I've said it before, I'll say it again. You are without a doubt one of the most hard-headed individuals I've ever come across. I appreciate the conviction, but sheesh...

Not just talking about the Cardinals or Yadi. If it is to "help the game" then all teams should require it. All the gadgets in the world ain't gonna help make people watch more baseball. They watch IF their team is winning and maybe has a "super star" or two. You won't like this comparison because it's another sport but it most certainly applies. Did lots of people stop watching college basketball and their playoffs because the game is slowed down by the constant reviews? Not that I've heard about! Can't lay on my back and type on my desk top computer. ;)

The gadget comment just isn't true. YOUR (and mine, for that matter) isn't going to watch more. But, we're not the target audience. Or we shouldn't be.

College basketball viewership during the regular season is way down too. March Madness is a different beast. That's like comparing it to the baseball playoffs. Not the baseball regular season.

Idk man, you're talented! I can totally see you pulling it off.

FTR...I hate the need for the gadgets, but it's where the game has taken itself. MLB has put itself in the hole. The game is progressively longer for a number of reasons. K's/BB's being the overwhelming result of AB's which increase pitch counts which make the game longer. The crazy number of pitching changes, which will only increase with the DH. The controlling of the running game by pitchers holding and stepping off non-stop, which necessitates the pitch clock. The ridiculous amounts of visits allowed even after a feeble attempt to change the rules. It's nuts. Baseball hasn't evolved to keep up with the younger audience. And it shows. Those around us are getting younger, that's who the changes are needed and meant for.

I'm guessing Yadi probably does what he wants, and I would let him when it comes to pitch selection, calling a game, etc. Best way to speed up the game is call the strike zone bigger (or just call it like it is written in the rule book). The home run or bust nowadays, not sure if it will ever go back, but ball is so much more fun to watch when they put the ball in play.

I think many are like me in I enjoy watching college softball much more than MLB. 7 inning game moves fast, you have bunting, stolen bases, hit and run.

I totally agree on watching softball over baseball. A pitching change in softball takes about half the time of baseball if the new pitcher had any time to warm up before going in. The HR ball is much more prevalent in softball these days but the bats they have now are hot as a firecracker. When they have the alumni game at 3Rivers the old players always tell me if they had the bats these girls have now they would hold all the records in that department. 3R has a very nice mix of power and speed once again this year. Their top 3 in the order are really good. Looked at the stats not too long ago and they had 68 SB's and had been thrown out 6 times. I'd bet the ones that were thrown out stealing were not in the that top 3.
I also agree on calling the strike zone as it in the rule book. If you look at the K-zone box on TV the top of it is about waist high. It can be a HR ball above that but not a strike.

Just took a peek at the 3R stats again, they now have 116 SB's and thrown out 8 times to go with 32 HR's and only hit into 8 DP's.

Here’s how it works Mr. Technophobe

I don't read that stuff, who knows what kind bugs are put in those things .If you want me to read it type on here yourself. Technophobe? I use a computer and cell phone everyday, but they don't throw or hit a baseball either. Every new idea is NOT a better idea.

It was an MLB video showing how easy it is to use. The pitcher, Infielders and the CF are all told via the bill of their cap what pitch is being thrown. More, better and faster communication. Less standing around.

Instead of just playing the game and having think for yourself a little. Heaven forbid anyone having to do that in sports anymore.

What the hell are you talking about?
Did you watch last nights game? Edmonds took a break from talking about himself to say how incredible it would have been to know every pitch that was going to be thrown while playing centerfield. But hey, you know more than Jimmy.

They used to have think for themselves and react to what happens. How horrible that was for over a hundred years. Maybe Edmonds could have dove for a few more balls when he didn't have to if he knew what pitch was coming.

Yea he was terrible. You are better.

You love 3.5 hour games, the shift, and horrible calls by the ump but don’t want the CF to know the pitch and you hate the consistency of the electronic balls and strikes. Makes a lot of sense.

Never said anything about being better than Edmonds, he was really good. That doesn't mean he, and many others, dive for a LOT of balls they could have caught on their feet. Now we have the tremendous sliding catch where they slide and make the catch about waist high because it looks cool on the highlights when they could have caught it on the run and been in good throwing position. If you can't see that I can't help ya.
I see you like all the new fangled high tech/metric stuff, but you want to be able tell a manager he can't play his infielders anywhere he wants? Why do you want the fielders to know what pitch is being thrown if you don't think they should be able play where ever they want? Should outfielders have to play left, center and right field and not dare to move around according to the batter's tendencies or how the pitcher is throwing him? Should manager not be able to pull his infield in for a play at the plate with the game on the line, or even bring OF's in in the bottom of the 9th with the winning run on 3rd and less than 2 outs? How deep in the woods do you wanna get with this stuff?

Pretty damn simple. You can play outfielders wherever you want. Even on the infield. But you have to have two infielders on each side of second base with their feet in the dirt. That’s all. No other restrictions. Not nearly as complicated or restrictive as your drama.

Then why not infielders? Why should they HAVE to do that? Why can't manager play them anywhere HE wants? Now they can't even play deep or in close if they want? Tell me who is really being over dramatic if that's how it works.
What restrictive drama do I have? I said last fall I was ok with the auto strike zone thang after some of the calls I saw in playoffs. But if they want to call it right they need to make it like the rule book zone, not top of the zone just above the belt.

When I pay $250 for a ticket I would just as soon see a 4 hour game. Why do we want the games to end sooner?? If thats a driving force why play them at all
