What has happened to Mizzou basketball? I understand the SEC and getting crushed in football, but it is so sad to see a place that was jam packed when I was growing up for 20 years deteriorate so badly the last decade. Truly astonishing how irrelevant they've become.
Dating myself, but my first year watching was the Doug Smith and Anthony Peeler show and Stormin Norman.

I guess I'll date myself, I got to watch Peeler in HS when they played in the P.B. Showdown here in my home town. Kid was pretty awesome in HS.

I too started watching during the days of Stipo, Frazier, Sundvold etc. Sundvold was my idol when I was a young lad and the one who most inspired me to start playing.

The first clue to what has happened over the years is to look at where the above mentioned players were from. They were all from Missouri. Peeler was from Missouri as well. Somewhere in there, the top players from this state stopped considering Mizzou as a place to go and went out of state. It was a big reason why Norm was forced to resign I believe and it continues to this day. There was a bumper crop of in-state talent in the mid to late 90’s who went out of state.

Now if Mizzou could consistently land 4 or 5 star recruits from out of state that wouldn’t be so much of an issue, but Mizzou isn’t doing that consistently of course. The coaches we’ve had lately have been less than stellar. Mike Anderson did the best job out of any of the coaches after Norm of getting the most out of the talent at his disposal. Snyder did a nice job of recruiting, especially at the beginning of his reign, but he had issues and wasn’t a great game coach. His teams seem to lack discipline on and even off the court. Then came Haith, Kim Anderson and now Cuonzo. Ugh…

So it all starts with the coach. Mizzou needs a good respected coach who can keep the top talent in this state at home (which also creates more fan interest) and build a program from the ground up. But the top experienced coaches don’t have Mizzou on their radars right now so it’ll probably have to be someone young and eager, like Norm was at one time, to restore the program to past glory.

Detroit was the hot bed for Mizzou recruiting grounds in mid 80's to early 90's

Yep. Coward, Doug Smith, Buntin, Jeff Warren, etc

Rich Daly, Norm's assistant, was working that pipeline with a fixer in Michigan named Vic Adams

I started watching Mizzou basketball back in the Ricky Frazier, Jon Sunvold, Stipo, Mark Dressler, Moon McCrary, Prince Bridges...era. Norm Stewart put a quality team on the floor year in and year out. We were spoiled by how good he was and how good is players were. They didn't always make a big splash in the NCAA tournament, but they won plenty of Big 8 championships and the games against Kansas, Oklahoma, Kansas State, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State were always barn burners. My wife and I were at the Mizzou football game on Saturday and when we walked by the Hearnes Center it brought back a lot of memories of the days when that place was packed, rockin' and a ticket was hard to come by.
I got to see a lot of Frazier in his HS days and McCrary at 3Rivers.
Anthony Bean that was the PG on the '92 championship team at 3R is back here now the assistant coach. I assume Coach Brian Bess plans to retire soon and Bean will take over as head coach or he probably wouldn't have taken the job.

Bingo. Dr Detroit and Vic. I was a freshman or sophomore at MU and had a chance encounter with Coach Daly at the bar at Boone Tavern. It was an entertaining evening.

And he got them on probation. My uncle was AD at Pensacola JC after Daly left there. He had to clean up a huge mess. To leave a JC on probation take a lot of work.
