No. 9 Tigers Visit Kent State in Dual Season Finale
Feb. 20, 2014

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Fresh off his 200th career victory in a 21-9 conference win over Old Dominion last Sunday, Brian Smith and the No. 9 Missouri Tigers travel north to Kent State looking for their 10th win in their final dual of the season on Friday evening.

Last time out, the Tigers (9-2, 6-1) handed Old Dominion their ninth loss of the season fueled by a Joey Lavallee decision over No. 19 Tristan Warner. Lavallee's 7-2 win broke a 6-6 tie at 157 pounds, giving the Tigers a lead they would not relinquish. Mizzou's true freshman has another tough test versus Kent State's Ian Miller, who holds the top ranking in the MAC at 157 and is No. 4 nationally. Lavallee entered the national rankings at No. 18 after topping ODU's Warner.

Redshirt freshman Lavion Mayes will also have a tough task at hand Friday when he battles Tyler Small. In the most recent MAC rankings, Mayes and Small are tied for fourth, giving their matchup huge conference implications. Mayes is coming off a tough 2-1 loss against No. 4 Chris Mecate in a match where riding time was the deciding factor.

Mizzou holds a 5-1 advantage all-time against the Golden Flashes, with their lone loss coming in the championship dual at the 2012 Virginia Duals, 18-14. Friday night's dual will feature six Tigers ranked in the top-20 in their respective weight classes. The Golden Flashes only have one grappler, Ian Miller, ranked in the top-20, with others just outside the rankings.

Kent State's highly ranked 184-pounder Sam Wheeler will not compete. Wheeler was suspended indefinitely from the program due to anti-gay tweets directed at Michael Sam, a former defensive end at Mizzou and an NFL Draft hopeful. Wheeler sits at No. 13 among 184 pounders in the nation, with Mizzou's starter Johnny Eblen just behind him at No. 14.

Live streaming video of both duals can be seen with a subscription on Flowrestling. Additionally, live audio can be heard free on Golden Flashes Radio on iHeartRadio.

Tiger Style Closes Out Regular Season with 24-9 Win Over KSU

Feb. 21, 2014

KENT, Ohio - The No. 9 Missouri Wrestling program closed out the 2013-14 regular season with a 24-9 conference victory over the Golden Flashes from Kent State on Friday evening. The Tigers won seven of 10 matches on the night, including bonus point victories from Drake Houdashelt, Johnny Eblen and Devin Mellon.

Freshman Barlow McGhee started things for the Tigers, topping Del Vinas of Kent State 3-1. McGhee took Del Vinas down late in the second for a 2-1 lead, and added an escape in the third to give Mizzou an early 3-0 lead.

At 141 pounds, Lavion Mayes's 7-2 overtime win gave Mizzou the lead for good. Mayes had a 2-0 lead after the first, but Small responded by riding Mayes tough on top in the second. Small would escape in the third period and added a point for riding time to tie the match up at 2. In the second sudden victory period, Mayes took Small to his back for two points and a three-point nearfall to win over his Kent State counterpart. Both grapplers shared the No. 4 spot in the most recent MAC rankings at 141 pounds.

Juniors Drake Houdashelt, Johnny Eblen and Devin Mellon all added major decisions to put the dual out of reach. Houdashelt nearly recorded a technical fall over Michael DePalma after a nine-point third period, winning 15-2. Eblen held Cory Campbell scoreless in an 8-0 win, his 20th win of the season. And Mellon closed the door on the Golden Flashes with a 12-1 win over Mimmo Lytle.

The Tigers end the regular season with a 10-2 record and a 7-1 mark in MAC Conference action. It's the 13th consecutive winning season for Brian Smith and Tiger Style wrestling, and the win was Smith's 199th as Mizzou's head coach. Smith picked up his 200th career win last weekend against Old Dominion.
