Missouri State Bears hire...

Checks a lot of the boxes...
- Current NCAA Div. 1 head coach
- Former player and assistant coach in the MVC (Illinois State)
- African-American (MSU president Cliff Smart wanted a black coach)
- Comes from the Marshall-Heiar coaching tree having been at Withrop & Wichita State (under Gregg Marshall), and Chipola College - Florida JUCO (under Greg Heiar)

Heiar's DUI in Florida killed his chances to get the job and he's white and a little rough around the edges.

Just glad it wasn't some of the other people who's names have been thrown out over the last two weeks.

Interesting hire. Not a lot of success at Tennessee St. But it's not exactly the most basketball rich school in the OVC. Then again, the OVC isn't really anything special. Has the security of having been a head coach...I'd have rolled the dice on Heiar. But then again, I appreciate rough around the edges.

I am biased, but I think Kim English would have done very well down there. The lack of experience is a negative however.

I think Dana Ford is a fine choice. Has quite a bit of experience but yet is still very young. If he can keep the young core of that team together, they will have a good chance to make some noise in the MVC.

Smart would not go with Heiar because of his DUI in Florida. Plain and simple. And, he was set on hiring a black coach. Plain and simple! Other wise, he might have been hired.

If we were going to hire Kim English, we might've just as well hired Keith Pickens! Plus, English has some social media problems (attacking MSU softball coach Holly Hesse to name a few) that hurt him as well as his lack of experience.

I was hoping for Joe Dooley or Steve Forbes, but they wanted far too much money than MSU has at this time.

Smart not so smart with his reasoning. That DUI was darned near 15 yrs ago, right? Seems goofy. And hiring based on color seems odd too. Hope he got it right though.

Forbes and Dooley would've both been nice options. Forbes can coach. But it's hard to imagine either of those guys not coming along with a little baggage.
