Missouri High School “Mo Bowl Week”

Some have mentioned how silly the playoff system is for the first week anyway. And someone else mentioned just taking the top 4 from each district into the playoffs.

So once again, here is the idea. Take the top 4 only. (I know, there will be examples of #5s and #7s that made a big run, and how do you make it fair for #5s. Life isn’t fair. You come up with a scoring system and stick with it.)

Numbers 5-8 play in a District Challenge Match-up with the corresponding ranked team:

Example: #7 District 8 vs. #7 District 7. They play their bowl game, and they are done.

Benefits:

1) Finish the season a week earlier in November.

2) More competitive final games.

3) Positive finish for struggling teams.

4) MSHSAA still makes almost as much money.

5) Regular season games become MUCH more meaningful.

*** ADDED THERE WERE ONLY NINE (THAT IS 9) TEAMS WITH A WINNING RECORD RANKED BETWEEN 6 AND 8 IN ALL CLASSES.

Let's see - cut the state playoff field in half based on geographical terms not on who the best 32 teams are. Seems legit. You do realize there are some districts that only have 1 or 2 good teams in them, while other districts have 5 or 6, right? I remember back in the '70s and '80s REALLY good teams, like undefeated teams, were left out of the playoffs based on a point system. How exactly is that right?

Bottom line is, the current system is the fairest it's ever been. Everyone has a shot. Quit bitchin.

The old scoring system really cut out a lot more teams though. Then they went to the final four games as a round robin. Then the current system.

I still think this system is ridiculous. MacDonald Co v Webb is a joke.

There’s going to be complaining regardless of what system is used. I say we just stick with one system for awhile. I mean, haven’t we changed the system twice in the last decade?

This is the best system we've ever had. You get your seed and you settle it on the field. Sounds great to me.

On the positive side, most of the horrible games are over after the first week, and we are mostly left with 1-4 anyway...with their first round practice game out of the way.

I totally understand that a game like Mac vs Webb is a waste of time. But I'd rather see a legit 5 seed make a run in this system than not. Like Cards said you could have a 9-1 5 seed in some districts.

It would be a lot of work, but I think I have looked at this before...but the % of 5 seeds or below that make it past two rounds is probably about 5% or less.

Example: 1971 Harrisonville Wildcats (10-0), and only undefeated team in Class 3A that season didn't make the playoffs.

Just to blow this whole line of argument out of the water, I went and looked at all of last year's district standings prior to the playoffs.

Here are the number of teams in each class with a WINNING RECORD FROM THE 6TH THROUGH 8TH POSITION:

CLASS 6 - 1 TEAM
CLASS 5 - 0 TEAMS
CLASS 4 - 5 TEAMS
CLASS 3 - 1 TEAM
CLASS 2 - 0 TEAMS
CLASS 1 - 2 TEAMS

SERIOUSLY? THIS IS CRAZY.

If this system is so bad then why do all the other sports also use it. Buy this logic you should just play the top half of the teams in districts in basketball, Wrestling, Soccer. This comes down to what the coaches and AD's want and what they feel is best for the kids that play the games not the fans. If they didn't like this or felt it was not in the best interest of the kids, I am sure they could vote to change it at some point. Most of those bitching about this is the fan's, forget this is more about the kids who play the game.

I am sure most teams/kids don't want that last game or a chance at the top team taken away from them just because the fans don't want to watch that game. This game is suppose to teach kids not to give up. If we go by what you the fans want then nobody should ever play Webb or Carthage or the great teams until the playoffs because we don't want to watch a team get slapped around but the great ones, until a meaningful playoff game. That's just bullcrap..

It isn't bitching. I'm suggesting a way better system. It is packaging. Would kids prefer to play a comparable team (who they might normally not play) with a chance to win a Mo Bowl District Match-up trophy, and leave their final game as winners? Damn, if you can't sell that, then you should be a librarian or a newspaper editor. Easy sell.

How about giving the top 2 teams in each district a bye and have better matchups in the 1st round of districts. That way everyone had a shot and you don't have the big mismatch in round 1?

Last year I presume.

I don't get your argument. 4/5 games are usually good ones. 3/6 games have potential. 1/8 and almost all 2/7 games are snoozers, but those 1 and 2 seeds have earned a tune-up game. It's one week sacrificed for the viewing public to ensure EVERYONE is included. More than a fair trade IMO.
