With summer hoops coming to an end I thought we could look at a few of the top Class 2-3 teams in the area.

Figured that this might give us something to talk about to pass the time here in the dog days of summer.

Some of the teams that are intriguing in ALPHABETICAL ORDER:

Belle
Blair Oaks
California
Eugene
Fatima
Hermann
Saint James
South Callaway
Southern Boone
Steelville

Let's start at the top

As far as I know, Belle has a very solid team coming back this season. They have a solid player in Smith but I don't know if they have enough guard play to go with her to be a threat among the Class 3 powerhouses of the area.

Seems like, after looking at last years schedule, that their win total is a product of who they play. If their schedule is similar I would expect to see another big win total from the Lady Tigers.

Did they win their conference last year?

Steelville returns the house and a good freshman group that will contribute immediately.

St James is gritty and could make a deep run if alignments stay the same. Scoring may still be their weakness.

SoBoCo will have a shot at South Callaway if they are 100% healthy. Looked really good at times over the summer.

Fatima will set flare screens win state in XC.

SoBoCo is down a starting point guard. She suffered a torn ACL during soccer season. Will be interesting to see how that impacts them early on. I do not see them challenging South Callaway.

Saint James will always be tough defensively as long as Coach Wells is around but their scoring issues hamstring them badly. Still wouldn't want to see them on the schedule. If their district stays the same I would bet the farm on a repeat.

Not sure what to expect to see out of Westphalia this year but I do believe you are correct on the cross country business. They like to mix up zone defense, pressure people, and play fast. They also have a returning All-State guard in Brandt.

3 way tie for GVC Conference last year, Belle, Cuba, and Steelville.

Cuba lost a lot I am assuming?

Coach Collins loves that 1-3-1. He also has a very good core of young players that will only get better as they learn the ins and outs of the zone.

The lost 1 to graduation. Return 4 who started at the end of last year. They will be guard heavy.

Cuba's PG is pretty salty, they also have a post, who I think will be a Junior, who was impressive last year, as well.

Travel ball mentality from the players and parents have plagued cuba for the last 5 seasons or so. Coaches get 0 respect from the stands and it's why they cant get over the hump.

Cuba might actually be lack of travel ball players? I have not seen many teams that play competitively that have players from Cuba? Gotta put in the work in the off season to improve for the most part.

I think ur misunderstanding me...the culture of this specific travel ball club influences parents and players negatively.

They play for the Blackout traveling team

The Aau team my daughter played was fortunate. Girls worked hard and parents allowed me and other Coach to do our job. Had a girl play at U Conn, Drake, Drury, Lindenwood and 2 @ Columbia College

Okay.

Steelville as the favorite in the GVC, followed by Belle and Cuba.

Frisco League has its own thread going, but it is Licking as the favorite.

Anyone want to dive into the Four Rivers? Show Me Conference?

Sho Me --I will take Fatima in a huge upset over South Callaway in a late regular season matchup. Junk D and adjustments will be huge in this game.

Four Rivers--Sullivan is tops.

Hoopsquad20, you must have some type of psychic premonition or something. You say junk D and adjustments will be huge in the Fatima/South Calloway game, with Fatima pulling out the win. You claim Newburg and Richland will finish above Licking in the Frisco League, with Newburg claiming the top spot. And you believe Sullivan will claim the title in the Four Rivers Conference, even though St. James beat them over the summer during the Licking Camps. Your Four Rivers prediction is understandable. Anyone could make an argument for Sullivan finishing in the top spot. However, your predictions in the Frisco and Show-Me run contrary to logical thinking. I just can’t figure out how you can make those predictions based on what everyone knows about these teams. Licking made final four last year and brings back virtually everyone. South Calloway is tough as nails and nearly beat Licking at the start of last season. Yet, you choose other teams to finish ahead of both of these teams in their conferences. Unless you have some type of psychic ability and see something the rest of us can’t (future injuries, etc), I just don’t see how you can pick Newburg and Fatima to finish in the top spots. Or maybe you just like rooting for the underdogs. For me, I love rooting for the underdog and I love to see underdogs upset conventional thought. Any thoughts on Hermann or Russellville? The Quincy girl from Herman is pretty phenomenal and Russellville has an incoming freshman that should get a lot of varsity playing minutes. Not sure where either of these two teams will finish in the conference.
As for travel ball, you are attributing a lot of negativity toward a particular organization. You claim that this organization negatively influences parents and players. The founder of the organization showed his displeasure with his daughter’s former high school coach and that’s it. He didn’t promote a culture that negatively impacted players. His organization drew players from a large swath of schools and he encouraged all players to work hard ( both in-season and out-season), show respect for both coaches and opponents, be humble, and give thanks to God. Just because he wasn’t crazy about his daughter’s high school coach doesn’t mean that he negatively influenced players and parents from all schools in the surrounding area. And you are sorely mistaken if you believe that all the parents’ displeasure for the high school coach came from the influence of this organization’s leader. Those seeds of discord were sown by many factors, not just one man. This organization had a powerful impact on the surrounding communities and offered experiences to players that they otherwise would never have gotten. I’m not saying everything or everyone was perfect, but if you weigh the pros and cons, you would see that the cons just can’t stack up to all the positive experiences afforded to the players.
I’m not saying all of this to start an argument or to get on your bad side because that’s certainly not my intent. I love reading what you and others post and hope to be able to respond without feeling like I’m ruffling feathers. I don’t want to make anyone mad because by doing so, I’ve left a bad taste and will always be seen as a contrarian by those people. But that’s just how social media works. Someone disagrees with another and before long, all kinds of nasties are being hurled back and forth. So trust me...I’m not looking for a fight or argument. I’m just giving my opinion, the same way everyone else gives theirs.

And I agree with you Hoopsquad20, Steelville will easily come out on top in GVC if they can find a way to contain Halle Smith from Belle. Also, Steelville finishing on top is contingent upon the healthy return of ALL its players. If Church and Perkins return 100% healthy and Booker doesn’t sustain any injuries, they should be in fine shape.

you win oldschoolmo. agree to disagree. Fatima will make adjustments and control the tempo, Licking is prime for an upset especially on the road. They didn't look good last summer.

My quote for summer- Never as good as it looks nor as bad as it looks. The truth is somewhere in between.

Personally, I think this is going to be a very entertaining season. I think the mix of teams with a lot of girls coming back with the 5 new coaches will really be fun to watch. Cannot wait until November to see how it all plays out! Hopefully everyone stays healthy throughout so things can truly be settled on the court.

Unfortunately for Belle when you only have one other player who is a consistent scoring threat teams will simply pack it in and Smith is going to have 4 or 5 girls around her every night.

I really cannot see Licking getting beat by anyone in the Frisco League. The talent gap alone makes the possibility of an upset happening almost zero.

Dont be surprised if Fatima goes to Mokane and comes out a winner. South Calloway has more horsepower but I agree with Hoopsquad20 because of the advantage Fatima has on the sidelines.

Smith has become a really nice player. She would be unstoppable except for the fact you stated that she will probably see a lot of zones or at a minimum be double teamed all season. She will be fun to watch when she gets her opportunities that is for sure.
