He's smart enough to know that his 15 minutes are rapidly going by. Can't say I blame him. Not every borderline pro player has a marketable image.

I would actually argue that a lot of people care. While I don't like the show, it has had 19 seasons, starting back in 2005. So its a safe bet that lots of people actually do care.
I will agree that this threads connection to football is distance at best. Yes Michael Sam played football and was considered to be pretty good, but his dancing with the stars appearance, is just meh
although I did watch it last season when Tommy Chong was a cast member, Im not really a fan of the show.
Having said that, from what I have seen of the show, Sams should have Judges "Lenny and Bruno" in his Hip Packet right off the bat.
