I've bit my tongue long enough. In Class 3A, Whitfield's only loss is to the Class 5 #1 Kirkwood. Last week they beat the Class 4 #2 Parkway North by 16 points. The beat Trenton in the Class 3 semi-final and they returned their leading scorers from last year. Yet when the initial rankings come out, Whitfield is behind Trenton. Lutheran North also beat Trenton in the third place game and returned their leading scorers as well. Whitfield has already played a tougher schedule than Trenton will play all year. They are also the #4 seed in the Visitation Christmas tournament. The most competitive girls basketball tournament in the state other than the State tournament. Please explain why they haven't moved up in the rankings. Furthermore Lutheran North only has 1 loss on the season to Class 3 #1 Strafford and they beat the current Class 3 #10 Park Hills Central. Why is it they haven't moved into the rankings as well. Is there a regional bias? Are all of the Voters homers for Mid-mo/SW mo basketball? I'm not sure. Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I don't have a dog in the fight and honestly will have to look on google to know where Trenton even is... but it seems if your complaint is against them, they are still 8-0 (even if it's against a weaker schedule), Lutheran North got beat by 40. That is probably why they dropped so much. Whitfield is the highest ranked team with 1 loss, so obviously there is a lot of respect there. I'm not sure where I get why you're so upset about that one?

First off, Lutheran North, after finishing 3rd in state has never been in the top 10 this season. Yes they were dominated by Strafford, but they beat the # 10 team (Park Hills Central) last week. I would imagine Casey Korn and who ever helps him with the rankings had to see that the 1 loss Park Hills Central has this year is to Lutheran North. So now you have two teams with one loss and the team that won the head to head match up is not ranked? I'm sorry, at some point you have to question the decision making process of the individuals that create the rankings. The irony in this is that Clark County, the co - #10 ranked team in class 3 was beaten by double digits at the hand of Lutheran North in the playoffs last year. By the way, Metro high school And Cardinal Ritter College Prep are 2 other Class # 3 teams in the St. Louis area that would easily beat Trenton but based on what seeing I'm not surprised that they aren't considered.

Casey Korn let me help you out.
Cardinal Ritter - 6-0 - Beat the #9 class 5 team (Jefferson City)
Metro high School - 6-2 only 2 losses are to several top ranked schools in Illinois.

FYI... Trenton has played 1 team with a winning record this year. Whitfield has played 3. I know you can't fault a team for their opponents but seriously lets do a little homework please!!

For comparison sake, on the boys side. Whitfield, who placed 2nd in the state just like their girls did. Is the Class 3 #1 team in the state with 2 losses and has been #1 since the beginning of the season. One of which is to a Chicago Power House (Chicago Corliss) the other to #7 class 5a Hazelwood Central. Obviously strength of schedule has been taken into consideration as there are teams ranked lower than them that are undefeated.

So what's the Deal?

Wow, it is just some rankings. Really, the only ones that matter are the ones at the end of the year!

You have to realize that coaches are voting from all over the state (I assume). Coaches. When you vote across a class, have you seen all the teams? If I were voting, no idea how I could keep up with all the data. Couple that with some teams not keeping up their data on mshsaa, and no doubt there would be some regional bias I would think.

Polls mean squat, they give us something to talk about, which is working it appears. If I were a coach, I'd want my team under ranked. It would keep my team hungry and give an edge psychologically every matchup.

Exactly, I would want to be under ranked as well. Having the ranking just puts a target on you and teams are always going to give you their best. I have no clue how the coaches keep up with all the teams in the classes either.
