Machado

If they wont let STL negotiate in advance there is no way they are going to make an offer. Crazy. What would u trade for one year of Machado?

I wouldn't trade anyone if I was positive I couldn't re-sign him. I'm not into win at all costs. If the guy has no intentions of staying here or is going to get a ridiculous contract that we don't want I'm not interested. I still like seeing guys stick around and become a Cardinal, not just a rental in hopes of lightning in a bottle, as Jack used to say.

Nobody that matters. Can't imagine I'd even offer up one of the top 10 prospects. I'm not big on the one year rentals.

Machado is good enough that you could still give up a very good prospect for even one year of performance. Not Reyes or Weaver level, though.

He is, yes

But how can you justify to your fan base that your return on your 25 year old, generational talent was some guy from the shitpile of another organization
It is more justifiable at July 30th when you can say we're going to miss the playoffs anyway. But that hurts the return even more.

If I'm gambling on this trade, and the only offers are based on 1 year of service.....

I'm going to just wait it out and offer a qualifying offer. That draft pick is likely a better value

That's not what they should expect a trade before the season, because the acquiring team would also get to make a QO for Machado in the event they expect to lose him. Thus, the value the Orioles should expect is:

1. Whatever the value of one season of Machado is at $16 M or whatever he's going to make, plus
2. The value of getting to offer him a QO

However, there is no QO available for someone acquired at midseason. This is another reason the Orioles may get more value now vs. in July.
