Now everyone just hold your horses...

Bernsen has been getting bashed on this message board because of his past, and maybe (or maybe not) for good reason. Maybe he did have a few rough edges in the past; maybe they were blown out of porportion. Who cares? Now he begins a NEW chapter with the MACC Greyhounds. Regardless of what has happened in the past, he is now Moberly's head basketball coach.

As far as I'm concerned, Bernsen is 1-0 at Moberly. He won the head coaching position from 55 other applicants. The Board at MACC sat through extensive interviews and determined that this was the right man for the job. To be selected by this committee - who, I might add, also hired Seifert and Smith over the past decade - says something to me. I trust their judgement, and so now I trust Bernsen. He's given me no reason to doubt him at this point, and I will not until he gives me reason otherwise.

As for the rest of Region XVI, I wouldn't get too excited yet either. You've still got to deal with Gibbs, Smith, Hardaway, Wise, Burke, Gant and another freshman class that is just as solid as the preceeding. Need I go on? As long as this guy just gives them the ball, we're in good hands.

One more note, Bernsen has been around a lot of D-I ball. He was in charge of recruiting at Murray State and SMS when they both went to the Big Dance in the 80s and 90s. He can recruit!

You are very correct...

Moberly gets a very solid coach that won't likely be sending out resumes to every 4-year college opening. He'll bring stability to the program and continue the momentum already in place.

Re: You are very correct...

no need for you ignorant insult tossed at Coach smith.

Re: You are very correct...

That's no insult to Smith. Pat Smith is a fine coach with a very bright future. My point was that Bernsen, at his age and level of experience, is likely to stay at Moberly for quite a few years. When you hire an up-and-comer like Smith, you should expect him to move up and on after a short period of success. I doubt anyone was under any illusion that he would become a Gene Bess and stay for 40 years.

Bernsen brings a different situation. He is leaving the D-1 coaching ranks because he wants to be at Moberly, probably for the long term. His career is in a different stage. His situation and Smith's sitaution are like apples and oranges. He will bring stability to Moberly and--Hound fans hopes--a lot of success. Don't take that as an insult to Pat Smith or anyone else.

Re: You are very correct...

I hope you're right. I'd like to see the program keep a coach more than three years.

Re: You are very correct...

Actually, Bernsen said that Moberly is a faster route up than where he was with SEMO. Now whether that means he's looking to work his way up, I don't know. Even if he was thinking that, things change and people change their minds. Coach Smith wasn't looking to go anywhere, but the opportunity came and he decided to take it. Even if Bernsen thought he might only be here a few years, he could change his mind. But maybe he wasn't thinking that at all.

I do like how he has such a high regard for the Moberly program. He talked about it when he was here, and you can listen to his interviews on the radio and in the paper over the next couple days. He really regards Moberly as "the place to be" in junior college basketball.

Re: You are very correct...

I will hope for the best. I am worried that he will come in try to get the Hounds to play a half court game which would be a huge mistake.

Re: You are very correct...

steptor, congrats on your 500th post. also congrats(i guess) to the hounds and their fans on landing a coach. even though bernsen may not initially get 100% support, it's gotta be nice to have a new coach in place.

Re: You are very correct...

Thanks. I am disappointed in the decision. West Plains gets an young upcoming coach and we get an aging coach who appears to be on a downward slide. But I will give him a chance and hopefully he will prove me wrong. I remember at Jeffco he took an undermanned team and almost beat one of the Hounds best teams in the 80's in a 2 out of 3 series. I thought he outcoached Dana Altman up and down the floor in that series.

Yes we have a coach. And we have the returning nucleus from the R-16 champions and so far 3 good recruits. It is time to support him as we did Siefert and Smith. We have to trust the selection comiittee for they are mostly the same group that picked the two aforementioned coaches. Welcome Coach Bernsen.

steptor, who did you prefer? i kind of thought glash might have been the choice, but what do i know? i'm sure bernsen will do a good job though.

I would have preferred Glash or Stotlar but then again I have never coached in my life so who knows. My concern with Bernsen is he has been a half court offense coach. Hopefully, he will be able to adapt to a faster pace and the Hounds do have a lot of talent so that helps. He deserves to be given the opportunity also.

surely, he'll be wise enough to realize what a talented team he's inheriting and what their strength is and he'll adapt his coaching style a bit. looks like we landed another dandy guard so maybe we'll be able to match up better with you guys at the guard position this year and give you a run for your money in region 16. i can't wait already!

I am sure he will realize what he has and coach accordingly. You guys seem to be loading up and I hear Mineral Area is also. It may be another year before West Plains will be up to speed but who knows. It should be a great year.

"...We have a coach. And we have the returning nucleus from the R-16 champions and so far 3 good recruits."
That's probably the key thing in all of this. I don't see how the 'Hounds aren't the general favorite to repeat unless they lose players (and it looks like they won't).
Still, I wouldn't count out Three Rivers. I feel we have had the kind of recruiting year you guys had last year, and we know what the "kids from Moberly" did to the region. It had been at least 10 years since a team had made it through Region XVI with just one loss.
Either way, the fun starts in less than five months!

Bluff,

We feel that we have also had the recruting year that we did last year. This is two straight that Smith has recruited a stellar cast. The exciting this is that Bernsen can still sign two more.

The Hound recruiting class isn't bad, I'll say that.

All told, I think the black & gold and the red & gray are the cream of the crop in Region XVI for 2004-05. I think one of our teams are going to Hutch.
