Should be really competitive on the top with Farmington, Central and North County. Farmington has size and good guard play and might be the favorite to win the conference. They return pretty much everyone. Central is young, but really talented. If they don't take over the conference this year, it's theirs for the next few years. North County returns everyone from last year and they play harder than any team in the conference. After these 3 teams, I'm not sure how it pans out.

Should be fun to see those rivalry games with all 3 schools being so close to each other. Will also be fun to see if South Iron, with an enrollment of 70, can beat those schools with enrollments of 450, 650 and 1,000 in the Xmas tournament. They did it last year and will be the favorite to repeat.

Excuse me, but Ste Gen won last year's Christmas Tournament, MAAA regular season conference, and the conference tournament, and only lost 1 starter to graduation from a 27-1 season.

Agree on the girls side about St. Gen, but North County, Central and Farmington girls will also be up at the top with them too. But this is the boys forum. On the boys side, I'm not sure what St. Gen will have.

North County boys should be really fun to watch. They return everyone, arguably have the most exciting player in the conference (Kekec sp?), and a got a couple new transfer players. They've got to be in consideration to win the MAAA.

Farmington and Central reload every year. Potosi lost a few to graduation right? I do think Fredericktown will pull an upset or two this year.

Any small schools have a chance this year?

That NC-Ste Gen game was a strange one. Ste Gen hit their first 3 ball with about 2 minutes to go in the game and NC did nearly everything well that night.

Nc boys should be pretty good. Farmington and central right behind them.

Coach Arnold has some size to work with but St Gen and Central have to be the favorites in that conference.

NC won districts against Farmington in 2018. I believe Arnold was on the girls Farmington coaching staff that year too.

Facts over feelings. Sour grape families that are more interested in their kids playing time/stats than the success of the program. Couple that with the good ole boy network of board members. Has happened out at NC for years in multiple sports.

Under coached is correct. He couldn’t beat a potosi team in the district finals with probably the best player ever at nc. I don’t know if Arnold is the answer. NC has had a bunch of talent the last 5 years and still has a lot there.

I can't imagine who you're talking about being the best player ever at NC. :p

When you ask if small schools have a chance remember that there is no overall conference championship (unless you count the tournament). The small schools only play the big schools if they decide to schedule each other.

To break down small schools:

West County- likely a little better than last year, it seemed like they lost a lot of experience from the year before
Valle Catholic- may be the preseason favorite, buzz is that they might be pretty good
Arcadia Valley- Don't know too much about them, believe they have a new coach
Bismarck- may improve some, their early schedule is pretty rough. They should never play South Iron ever, anywhere, under any circumstance. One of them needs to get out of that tournament.
Valley Caledonia- got the two seed in their own tourney, but the field is a little weaker, especially without Bunker. Won easily on Saturday but they were playing Marquand.
Kingston- would not be surprised if they Cougars grabbed a couple of unexpected wins from more established programs. This might be one of the best teams ever out of Cadet.

Ste Genevieve Boys beat Farmington last night in the championship of the Sullivan Tourney. PHC beat Festus, and North County handled Hillsboro pretty easily. Sounds like the MAAA large school will be fairly competitive between Park Hills Central, Farmington, North County, and Ste Gen. I am curious how long Kekec from North County will be out as I think they would be the favorites with him but I heard he had a fairly serious injury during their last football game.

The large school should be fun. I think NC if kekec can come back and play like last season is the team to beat. But central, Farmington and ste gen will be right there. I think the small school will be very competitive. Valle and Kingston the 2 to beat. But AV and WC will both be coached very well.
Should be fun just have to watch from home

I heard on the radio that kekec had a chance to be back around Christmas but they weren't sure yet

Truth. Girls side, Shyla Tucker. There’s really not much of an argument for either really.
After high school Chris would probably be at the top. No one really expected him to reach the NBA and play a few years. But he wasn't really allowed to dominate in high school. We used to say Coach Bone was the only one who could hold Chris under 20 and he did a lot. I can still hear Coach Bone stand up and yell, Chris get back in the middle, anytime he would wonder outside looking for the ball. Lol. It was a shame he got hurt on a crazy play at the end of the half in the district game against Festus.

There have been others who were more dominate in high school in both both and girls. Shyla is definitely near the top. Dylan Coleman at Potosi was pretty much unstoppable too. I always wondered how good he could have been had basketball been his main sport. Lol.

I think I was a soph when our varsity beat them at AV. One of the most insane environments ever for a HS basketball game. Pretty sure Coach Mac and Coach Bone had words prior to halftime about something. Starkey hit about a million shots from the corners against that 1-3-1. I'll never forget going to the locker room to gather stuff and head to the bus. Walk right past Coach Mac firing up a dart just outside the locker room door. We just looked at each other, grinned, and nodded. Sometimes you just smoke em if you got em. Lol. The personalities and the talent that was in the MAAA back then was just awesome. When I first started coaching I'd call Coach Mac to buy something from Skeeter-Kell, and an hour later get off the phone giving him the full rundown of our team at the time. I miss that guy as much as anyone outside my family that has passed.

Man, he tried so hard to come back and play. Just couldn't do it. That matchup between them and Joe Jones was shaping up to be an absolute dandy.

I agree about Coleman. Chris foster was a pretty good player himself. Girls Skaggs, Forbes at Nc, the girl at valle that played at Indiana State. All pretty good players.

I've seen a lot of basketball in the MAAA over the last 35 years and I will give you Chris Carr, but some would argue that he isn't the best player to ever play at AV and I would be one of them. He was REALLY good, but so was Chris Foster. Foster was a game changer and an incredible athlete at maybe 5'10". At the conference tournament at MAC, he made one of the best plays I have ever seen. He sprained his ankle and had to go into the locker room to get it taped up. He comes back out and chases a breakaway and pins the ball against the backboard, pulls it down and puts the ball on his hip like nothing ever happened and then sees a teammate streaking down the floor and fires a bullet the length of the floor for the assist. Shyla Tucker was a beast, but I have to argue that Megan Skaggs was better. It's hard to argue with a State Championship, Class 3 Player of the Year, D2 National Championship, Conference player of the year in college, scores 50 in a college game and ends up being an All-American. I mean...we are debating some REALLY good players here. Keep an eye on the Bryant kid from Central....
Carr and Foster were both unreal. Carr was better, IMO. But as pointed out earlier, Coach Bone might've had a little to do with harnessing Carr. Lol...Shyla averaged 35 her senior year, I think. Averaged. And was pretty good at Arkansas St. I think she was newcomer of the year, and at least a two-time conference defensive player of the year. All from a girl that Cheryl Burnett said "didn't play enough defense" to play at SMS. If we're talking strictly about HS careers, she gets my nod. But I'm biased. Senior year, she absolutely put the entire team on her back to the Final 4. Watched her put up 28 against Owensville (I think) in the quarters. 28 not special? It was against a triangle and 2, with both guarding her. Coach Sheldon tried to put her at half court and play 4 on 3, then realized the best chance to win was just let her do her thing. Pretty sure she was scoreless after the 1st quarter. Then had 28, against two defenders and a third every single time she put it on the floor inside the arc. She was something special.

You biased?? No way..

Reminiscing is fun. Back in the day I played with a 5'7" buddy who became a scoring machine our senior year. Averaged 25 or so. Could really shoot it. We had a Three Rivers prelim game against Portageville. He was leading scorer in SEMO and had gotten some ink in the PB paper. A big crowd showed up. He proceeded to go ofer the first half. Couldn't buy one. Looked bad. Crowd was all mumbling he ain't that good. First play of 2nd half he fires from deep in the corner and it skims the edge of the backboard and splashes in. I said fellas get him the ball. He goes something like 17-20 in the 2nd half. Gets 37 total and we win the game. It was one of the most amazing things I was ever part of.

You'll appreciate this part. We go to Fredtown for class 3 district. Only two years we were ever class 3 was my Jr/Sr year and we had to go up there. Was probably smallest school there. We had only 7 players at that point and 1 of them never saw the floor. The Cats are top seed. We're 4-5. We match up in semis. They're pretty much all bigger than us. Gilliland was their big guy I think. We out run them for 3 quarters and lead. For some reason we decide to slow it down a little. Coach Mac goes box and one on my buddy. We panic and start giving it away. End up in OT and get beat. I think it was the only game all year my buddy didn't get at least 20 and I couldn't make up enough of it. Still stings after all these years. Lol.

Come on, dude, who is your buddy?

The Flat River Central '76 team has to be in the conversation for best MAAA team - I think 30-1 - only loss in State Semis. Greg Leet was JUCO All American at MAC and 2 yr starter at UAB. Leet could flat out shoot before the 3 pt line. The FRC '76 team were unbelievable shooters and had a little size, tough press, and were 7-8 deep with ballplayers. Coach Bill Bradley was a great coach and good guy.

I played golf with Coach Sheldon a few years back and he was talking about that run. What year did Shyla graduate? I went to SMS and it's hard to believe that she couldn't have made them even better. It would be really cool to have a ESPN Classic MAAA edition to be able to go back and watch those games again. My ex-father-in-law was Jeff Burgess and I remember him telling stories about the the Central boys from 76. He said their second 5 could have easily won the conference that year. The game that blew my mind from Megan was the quarterfinal game against Saxony the year after they won it. She pretty much carried the Central team to a lead after 3 quarters against a Saxony team that nearly beat Strafford in the Finals. If we don't have a 2 minute stretch in that 4th Quarter where we threw it away on consecutive possessions, I think we go back to the Final 4 mainly because Megan just didn't want to lose. The great players are so much fun to watch.
She graduated in 90. Final 4 year was 89-90. Lisa Davies and Oak Grove and Melody Howard and Marshfield were there too. Way, way too much for the Lady Cats to handle. The best team of Shyla's career was her junior year. Andrea Seabaugh was a year older than Shyla, and Andrea could flat play. 6' and ran the floor like a deer. Andrea tore her ACL around Christmas that year, or I'd bet the farm that team would've gone to the Final 4...That's a true story on Burnett. Shyla wanted to play there. Burnett told that to Coach Sheldon. If you know him at all, you could just imagine the response. Said he basically laughed at her and said your loss. Then went back and told Shyla and her parents. Oof. Man, they hated that lady after that. Lol...One of my best friends dads was about one of the best baseball players to ever come through the Mineral Area. He was a couple years older than the Rod Denman Freddy team that went to the finals in 70-71. My buddies dads teams were pretty good too. To listen to him talk about those mid-70s Flat River teams was like they were the Globetrotters or something. Not a guy to dote, but man he could go on forever about those teams and how good they were.

Just a tad biased. Lol. Played 2-on-2 against her and another girl on that team my entire freshman year in 7th hour PE. She was more physical than any dude I've ever played against. And would get seriously PI$$ED if we beat them. Such a competitor, but all the great ones are typically.

Those are two great stories. I love hearing them. Where did you play and who is your buddy?

Coach Mac was king of the junk defenses. When his boys played, I honestly think defense just annoyed him. They were so good offensively in the mid to late 80s. He'd just press and junk it up...Hope to either turn you over or get you to shoot it quickly. That way they could get it back and play offense. Man, he was a character. The bootheel guys typically are.

That's exactly how we played. We wanted the ball back as quickly as possible, and didn't really care how it happened. Lol.

Clearwater and the guy's name is Joe Cravens. We were 2nd in the state in scoring average at 86 my Jr year with several good Srs. We had the 166 point game in 1980 if you remember that. It was nuts. 52 in the first quarter. Could and should have went ahead and broken the state record but didn't know what it was. All 10 guys scored in double figures. The internet would murder you for that today. Lol. We dropped off quite a bit my Sr year. But still averaged upper 70s I think. Basketball was fun back then. Unfortunately we choked at district time both years.

They had a mystique about them and when you have Greg Leet, you were just pretty hard to beat. You saw a lot of young kids like myself playing basketball in their backyard trying to be as good a Greg Leet some day. It didn't work for me.

My wife teaches with Andrea at Fredrock. I think Shonda Matthews was on those teams too. We have had some good teams and good players come through the MAAA over the years.

The SMS womens team was fun to watch. My buddies and I would go watch every one of their games. Even though seats were free for students, the women's games were hard to get. The men's team was on the downside of Spoon's tenure and the Mark Bernson teams were pretty average at best. The women's team packed the Hammons Student Center.
Shonda was Shyla's 2 on 2 teammate in those PE classes. She was the second best player on that Final 4 team. I never guarded her in PE. Was TERRIFIED of her. Lol.

SMS was the same when I was there, except I was there for the first two Stiles years. Year before Jackie was still a tough ticket, but after her was rough. We'd wait in line for an hour to get the seats we wanted (right behind visitor bench). We'd regularly skip class to get the tickets. Guys tickets were pretty tough then too though. I think I was Alford's last two years (for sure the sweet 16 season) and one of Hinson.

I remember the Joe Cravens stories! Had a buddy that student taught under Bell in the early 2000s. Evidently the Joe Cravens stories were still alive then. Joe Cravens was a legend in those parts, for sure. As were those teams. Growing up as a kid, I knew Perry Kegley pretty well. He was my JH principal, but was coach of that 70-71 team. Was a darned good player at SEMO in the 50s or 60s. He and my grandpa were pretty good friends. He loved to talk ball and talked about those Clearwater teams a lot.

My Dad tells stories about Bismarck and Leadwood having some really good teams in the 50's and 60's. I know Louie Lucas was a legend at Bismarck probably in the early 70's.
He was. Still can't believe he's gone. Played many rounds of golf with Louie. One of my favorites. Hard to concentrate when he'd have you laughing so hard. Dude was RELENTLESS...Pretty sure Curt Boyer (played a lot of golf with him as well) was a darned good player back then too. Not sure where he played. I want to say Central.

I was at that game, it was a battle and she definitely didn't want to lose and neither did a couple of the Saxony girls.

He was hilarious. I was grouped with Louie, Curt and Mike Harlow one year on the golf trip to Springfield/Branson. We were playing Rivercut and Harlow and I were playing Curt and Louie. We came up on this old dude just driving around the course in a cart. He smelled like he had taken a bath in whatever he was drinking. Louie engaged him in a conversation and "introduced" our group to him. The old dude thought he said Arlo when he said Harlow. Louie called Mike Arlo Harlow the rest of the round. We beat them when Harlow holed a bunker shot on the 18th for an eagle. I think Curt did play at Central and played on some pretty good MAC Teams. We heard lots of really good Sechrest stories that day too. Louie was a first class dude!
That sounds JUST like Louie. We've had to play golf together, right???

Oh yeah. We played together in the Saturday morning game a few times and back in the good ole days when the coaches played during HS golf matches and tournaments!!
Man, I miss those days! They were fun...I think I've got it narrowed down. You retiring this year???

Yep! I'm going to work at Crown Pointe starting in June as Director of Instruction. Looking forward to it!
You lucky son of a gun! I'm jealous!!! Of both retirement and the second career. Congrats man! Well-deserved...I'm telling you, I miss that Sat/Sun game and the golf course. Well, mostly the guys that made both really fun. I actually had an interview setup at Farmington, then got the offer here. I would've loved getting back there to play in the game again.

My 2 cents.

My sisters went to St Joseph’s in Farmington in the mid 1960s. During that time, St Joe won the state championship with two giants inside (The Boyd Bros) and Randy Vessell from the outside was solid.

Regarding Freddy in 70-71, the MAAA was loaded that year. Leadwood was really good. But North County swept the conference at 11-0 that included a win over Freddy. NC couldn’t get by DeSoto in the district final. DeSoto beat them in three tournaments that year. So NC players had to go watch Freddy in the Class M final. NC was coached by Cy Bradley who had coached St Joe.

I was a sophomore and played some vs the Central 76 team. It was over after the first quarter. There have been more athletic teams in the conference in the 90s-2000s. But it is hard to argue that there has been a better team than that one, given what they accomplished. They had too many weapons and played as a team. Leet went from a good player to super man.
Burgess was really talented. And Redecker was a workhorse.

I saw Louie Lucas play a number of times and let’s just say he was never bashful about shooting. 🤓

Chris Foster is the best, most athletic, and most explosive player I have seen in the MAAA.

I have heard a lot of stories about the Boyd brothers. Did one or both of them play at St. Louis U?

Louie said he would hit that jumper from the corner and fall out of bounds and let the cheerleaders catch him!!!😂😂
Charlie at SLU, George at MAC and McNeese State.

I have heard my dad say many times that Louie Lucas was the best hitter he ever saw.

Thanks for the post Toots. Some good stuff. As a kid that moved to Fredrock in 85, that 70-71 team was legend. Mid to late 80s had some really good varsity teams, with Keith and Kerry Mac. But all the old-timers would talk about how good that 70-71 team was.

I can't imagine Louie being bashful about anything. Literally nothing.
