Washington State’s Mike Leach is set to become the next head coach at Mississippi State.

Pete Thamel tweeted the news. We can confirm the news, and a number of other outlets have followed with confirmation.

Leach had agreed to a contract extension at Wazzu back in early December. The new deal was set to pay him $4 million next season, and for the next four seasons after that.

Yet when an 18 year old kid signs a contract he gets penalized if he changes his mind.

Why that hasn’t been overturned in a court somewhere is mind boggling. What if you are a QB who signed with Wash St thinking you were going to be playing in the air raid?

It’s crazy and wrong. Kids pick a place based on a coach. For them to be fired or leave right after signing days is wrong.

It's almost like they should pick a school for the education they're going to receive...

I know that's idealistic/naive, but come on, these kids know coaches typically don't stay in one place very long for a variety of reasons.

Odd, does that mean MU actually could have had a chance at him? For that matter FSU?
Talk on tMB is Florida St. balked at his political leanings and that wouldn't mesh with local media. I'm sure Mizzou was in that camp as well.

Moo U is a great fit for him. Very fertile local recruiting ground in the Golden Triangle which suits his disdain for that whole process to a T. Mississippi schools are prohibited by state law to offer anything more than a 4 year deal. Expectations are in line with what he can deliver. Media is not intrusive. Blah, blah, blah, you get the idea.

Aside from one stand out season at both TTech and Wazzu I think the thing that keeps Leach in the national discussion is his goofy personality which quite frankly I'm extremely over and couldn't care less about. Drinkwitz is just as capable of delivering 8-5 seasons at Mizzou as Leach would've been, and looking at Leach's tenure that's pretty much what you can expect from him.

So if you love old man yelling at cloud type ramblings and the occasional funny and/or batshit bullying of the media then he's got tons of potential to deliver. If you want a coach who can make you relevant beyond that by actually winning big games, conference titles, and finishing better than .600 every year then he probably ain't your man. Which isn't to say that might just be the best Mizzou could ever hope for...

I don't know anyone's opinion on Finebaum, but the day they fired Moorhead, they throughout several names and when Leach's got brought up Finebaum and some of his Mississippi State followers seemed to feel he would be a bad fit there. The consensus was Mississippi State wants to have a coach who does the right things and doesn't make it about himself. They really felt Leach would not be a good fit. I will be interested to see what they say today.
