This was a very tough game. Monett is no pushover. They have a very tough defense, as usual. Their offense will get better as the season goes along. They had to replace almost their entire offense, only two returnees, from last year. Branch, a 220 lb. running back is a force when he wants to be. I have only seen him play the one game, but in the first half he seemed to go down after first contact. In the second half he decided to run over people and it took several defenders to bring him down. He plays both ways so he may have been trying to save himself. If they could use him only on offense, and he played mean on every down, he would be tough to handle.
As for Lamar, it took them a while to get rolling. In the first half, it seemed that everytime they would threaten to get things going, a big penalty would push them back. I don't know the exact total, but they had four or five major penalties that were drive killers. In the second half, Embry, senior running back, broke loose for a couple of long runs that helped to open the game up.
As I said earlier, this conference is shaping up to be very similar to last year. Carl Junction and Lamar seem to be on a collision course in game nine at Lamar. The winner will more than likely be the conference champion. As for Monett, they are still in the conference chase, but come district time, they will be a Class 3 team that could go along ways in the playoffs.
Also, I noticed that one of the suspended Lamar linemen played Friday night. The other two should be back in action this Friday vs Cassville.
