Guess all of the fans can stop beeching about Craig. OT gets his shot. We'll see.

Why do I get the feeling Mo got fleeced on this? Granted I tend to overreact, but he just traded two guys off the 25 man roster (one being a bat) to acquire Lackey. A team that's second to last in runs scored has added two pitchers and subtracted a bat.

$$ was a big part of this - clearly the Cards decided they had no interest in paying Allen Craig $26 M over the next 3 years. He looks like he's just not the same player he was before the injury. Have to wonder if the coaches and trainers felt he'd never be the same. Sox must feel differently to take on his contract. I think this has to be the key to the deal for Boston - they think they're getting a starter back at a good price for 3 years.

Or this was Mo's way of stopping Matheny from playing him every freaking day no matter how badly he was going.

It's time for more of Jay/Taveras/Bourjos/Grichuk. They really can't be worse than Craig was.

Joe Kelly is a marginal major leaguer. Nice depth guy but he's a 5th starter or a reliever. He's the most overrated guy on the team. We think he is better than he is because the Cards have a very good defense. He has some potential but his ceiling is back of the rotation. That's the kind of guy you can live with giving up.

I think the trade is shocking from a names perspective, but I was awfully down on Craig before this, so I'm not really bothered by it. To me it's basically Kelly for Lackey + selling Craig for the price of his contract. That isn't a bad trade to me.

I agree Rumor! They unloaded a contract that was looking worst with every Craig AB and Kelly is what he is a 5 to 6 inning starter. As I understand it Lackey is under contract for $500,000 next year. Now Matheny can't keep rolling out Craig. If Oscar doesn't play everyday now MM may be the next one to be shipped out of that clubhouse! I think MO is sending a message and that is you better play up to expectations or you may be the next one out the door. I like this trade better than the one they made yesterday and when you put them together I think it helps them. May help their offense if MM plays Taveras everyday and he can get going! I would like to be a fly on the wall when MO broke it to Matheny he was trading Craig!

One thing to add - Craig sucks defensively in the OF. He has more value for a team where he can play DH/1B. With how Matt Adams is playing, that's not the Cardinals.

The idea of 33 year old Allen Craig playing RF in 2017 - yikes. He needs to go to a team where the only thing that matters is how he bats.

I'm indifferent. Doesn't seem to me it will have the impact that will get us to the playoffs this year. But saves us money in the long run.

Twelve months ago I don't think any of us would have thought this was possible.
Craig had been a stud for 2 years and a post season performer.
If he gets healthy in 2015, perhaps he can return to form for Boston.
He is definitely a DH/part time 1B.

We are very, very left handed now. I hope to heck the Pirates
don't get Price now.

Yes we are very left handed. Yadi can't come back soon enough.

Also JOE KELLY IS NOW THE #2 STARTER ON THE RED SOX. Drink that in. That rotation is atrocious.

SABR guys are calling Cards the winner unless Lackey does something crazy and retires after the year. Getting a $15-20 M starter (from a one year deal perspective) for $500k for 2015 is pretty valuable, plus they have some pretty poor thoughts about Allen Craig being toast.
