Kickapoo and Glendale battle of the unbeatens

Is it just me or has it been a very long time since there was any talk about Springfield teams. Seems like since DGB was doing things at Hillcrest, it's been pretty silent. Hope it's a continued trend.

I don't remember a time that a Springfield "public" school was ever really relevant in football when it came to the title talk. I don't believe any of the Public schools have ever been to a title game, not saying they haven't had good teams just not that good.

Last year....Poo made the semis. They were undefeated until the semis. They are a relevant contender.

I've been in the area 9 years, and last years Poo team (and this years obviously) and the DGB Hillcrest teams are the only ones I can remember making any playoff noise. That said, I think Glendale will join that crowd soon. Mauk can evidently coach a little football. I'd love to be at that game tonight. Bet it'll be a fun one, if nothing else for the buzz and atmosphere. I hope the fans and students get a heckuva game.

I know back in the early to mid 90's, Parkview had some really good teams, but I wanna say that they only made the semis? Not totally sure.

And way way back in the day when Greenwood had a team, I want to say that they had some really good years, but I don't have too much info there either..

I'll have to do some research.

Greenwood and Springfield Catholic have both won state titles in football, but both of those schools are private. I think this thread was talking about the Springfield Public Schools.

Glendale's best team was probably in '66 - the year before the playoffs started!!! Typical Glendale bad luck. We've had good to very good teams a few times since('81, '96, '11), but we've never been known as a "football" school even though we've won more OC titles than any other school.

Kickapoo made the semis in '95 and that was the first time an SPS team had ever reached the semis.

SPS post-season teams:
'81 Glendale Quarterfinalist 9-2
'82 Kickapoo Sectionalist 9-2
'83 Central Sectionalist 9-2
'84 Central Sectionalist 6-5

I think they won a title or two? And Catholic has won one but I considered those private so did not mention them.

I forgot about that 83 central team they may have been pretty good with Gary Peanut Adams but ran into Parkwood twice. Or maybe that was the later teams I just remember going and watching him play when he was at central he was talented for sure.

Why did Greenwood drop the program back in the 90s?

I believe greenwood dropped it in 98 or 99, couldn't field a team. They had been pretty good too. I was in the area back then. I was on the 01 staff at Hillcrest, we lost to the Poo in sectionals which we beat earlier in the season, lost our starting qb in the Rolla game the week before, I think we might not have made it to the title, but we had a pretty good team and could have gone deeper if we still had our qb

#7 Class 5 Glendale Falcons (5-0) - 40
#4 Class 6 Kickapoo Chiefs (4-1) - 20
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Win #298!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't recall a previous meeting when both teams were undefeated and state-ranked. Might've been the biggest regular season game ever between the two schools in football. I remember the media hyping up the 2011 game, but not to the level of this game. Thrilled Glendale FINALLY won a big game like this. Haven't had very many big wins in the major sports the past 25 years. This would have to be near the top of the list. I don't count "upsets"...to me it's insulting to win in an "upset," because it means people think you're not any good and lucked into the victory. So, this win moves ahead of the 2014 upset and even the win in 2011.

Glendale defense is for real We came into this game with zero turnovers and four games. Tonight alone I believe there was one fumble and four interceptions. I give credit where credit's due great job Falcons

Is Glendale for real?
In a word, Yes.

They shouldn't be challenged the rest of the way in conference. Kickapoo made a lot of mistakes, but struggled to move the ball and was thoroughly outplayed. Learned (or had reinforced) a few things:

1. Kickapoo's offensive line, which was an area of concern entering the season, was exposed as a weakness. McGee had no room to run and Lawson had NO time to throw. They will not be competitive against Class 6 schools with powerful defensive lines.

2. Huston is the most poised and elusive high school QB I've seen in a long, long time. And he's only a junior.

3. Kickapoo lacks a credible downfield threat in the passing game.

4. Kickapoo freshman Jabin Johnson is going to be something special. His interception was highlight reel worthy.

5. Glendale's left tackle is a monster. But he went out in the second half with a leg injury. Sure hope it's not serious, because his absence could prevent them from making a possible deep playoff run.

6. Kickapoo's defense did as well as could be expected. They limited Glendale's yards after the catch and made them work for their scores. That said, 'Poo was fortunate to only lose by 20.

Kickapoo was 12-1 in Class 6 and lost to CBC in the Semi last season.

Bullit, did you see the game in person? If so, in particular how did you think Kickapoo looked physically (as in hitting/tackling) compared to some of the best Big 8 teams?

I was watching the second half on citylink tv and was honestly surprised at the level of play being less than what I would've expected. Was it just an optical illusion? Didn't see big hits, speed from backers and dbacks and d-ends like I expected. Missed tackles, pushing and wrapping as opposed to big gang tackles or hard hits from Kickapoo.

It's a little hard to see big hits and lots of speed from backers when the team is passing the ball every play.... lol
In the Big 8, generally the teams are going to pound the rock 70-80% of the time if not more, so you're going to see a lot more big hits.
whereas in the passing game, especially against a team that passes every play, more often than not, you're chasing them down or they're running out of bounds..

I have relation playing for the Poo and I have seen them in person a couple of times over the last few years. I wanted to make it to this game but had to play babysitter to my boys so we popped some popcorn and sat down for what we hoped would be a good game.

The announcers kept saying this is the game of the year in SWMO, well it is obvious by the lack of interest in this post that this game outside of Springfield and us die hard high school football fans this game really was not very interesting. The announcers need to get out a bit and see some other football teams, the CJ Webb game and the Monett Lamar game were by far a lot better than this snoozer. Kickapoo never really was in this game I thought. Kickapoo really needs to learn how to tackle, the biggest problem I saw was not wrapping or should I say ripping up the tackler. I saw so many shoulder bumps and the receiver would just spin out and keep running. By the second half it looked like the poo did not want to even be there or was just walking thru the motion, not sure if they just under estimated how much better Glendale had gotten?

I am really impressed by how much better Glendale is this year they have improved on defense and they were more physical on both sides of the ball than Kickapoo. Their receivers would not go down with first contact and how many times did Huston spin out of trouble to keep a play alive and he kept looking down field and would hit a big play. What was the name of that one receiver they had he looked on TV like he was big and had good hands and was not easy to bring down, wondered if he has any college offers.

However I don't know if Glendale (Huston & and the receiving core)were really good or Kickapoo's poor tackling just made them look good or vice versus maybe they made the poo look bad. I just have not seen Glendale play any other time so nothing to base this performance on.

Yeah, well, nothing taking place west of Springfield (or east for that matter) is of ANY interest to me or most people in Springfield. This WAS the biggest game of the year for Springfield and the metro area. I couldn't care less if Monett or Lamar or Joplin or Webb City or CJ fans don't agree.

See there you go it was the biggest game in the Springfield metro area I would agree, but probable not in SWMO.

It comes across as a slam unfortunately, but realistically proving yourself the best Springfield football team is pretty important because not all that often can you claim much more than that when it comes to football accolades.

Given what I watched and possibly confirmed by more than Bullit, Kickapoo did not seem that impressive at least last night. Which leads to the opinion that while Glendale currently looks like one of top 5 SW MO teams (in any order at this point since we have no head to head round robin), one could question whether Kickapoo would defeat both Monett and Lamar to win the Big 8, or beat enough COC teams to win that title either.

It's just one loss, but it was a whooping by the score and the Chiefs looked very beatable last night.

Every year it's the same crap lol. The whole season last year up until Kickapoo won their district all that was being said was "Kickapoo would be middle of the pack in COC and don't have a shot in districts, all year long". And hell, the COC is down this year and shown more parity than ever and you want to question whether or not Kickapoo would be up to snuff? Get outta here. Hahahaha.

Obviously my opinion, based on what I've seen thus far. I saw yet more evidence that one of the bigger and of course better teams in the area based on record is NOT obviously head and shoulders above the area's best Class 2, 3, 4 and 5 schools. That's my point here.

Wouldn't have posted anything on here about all of this if Kickapoo would've looked more like a powerhouse last night that I expected to see.

Not taking anything away from Glendale. I was pulling for them and I wanted to see a falcon victory, but Kickapoo loses to a very good Glendale team in a rivalry game that they were the probably plus 4 or 5 on turnovers and all of a sudden they're not a powerhouse.
Same thing happened to Webb the first two weeks of the year, turnovers galore but by god they're still the best team in the COC lol. Never ceases to amaze me.
For the record, I'm not criticizing Webb city at all. I still think they're the best team in the state year in and out but just making a point here.
If Lamar committed 5 turnovers and lost to Valle here in a few weeks it would be all about how Lamar played their worst game this decade and beat themselves but when it's someone from the ozark conference it's different.
SWMO has the best football in the entire state with the exception of class 1 and I would have to give that to NWMO, but we've always got to criticize other conferences or make conjectures based off of one game. Blows my mind lol

Monett and Lamar would get blasted by both Kickapoo or Glendale.

First I never said Lamar nor Monett would beat either one of these teams has nothing to do with this post. I was comparing how the game stacked up to other games in the SWMO area in interest. I personally wanted to make it to this game it peeked my interest, Like I said I have a relative on the Kickapoo team and I also wanted to see Glendale and that high powered offense. However when I posted about the game on here and we are talking about two undefeated teams who were both ranked nobody was talking about it or showed any or even little interest. There are only a few Springfield football fans even defending it and I don't know if any of them live in Springfield? Football in the town of Springfield is just not very big it even shows in the stadiums they all are cramped old and not designed to hold large crowds.

"stadiums they all are cramped old and not designed to hold large crowds"

Well, Glendale and Hillcrest got new stadiums in recent years. Kickapoo's grandstand is perfectly fine. Parkview's JFK Stadium was re-built in 2000. Only Central has an "old stadium" but it is the only one with some chair-back seating, which was installed in partnership with Drury Univ. I know they might not be as fancy as some, but it's what we can afford to do in a large school district like Springfield (25,000+ students) with many concerns that smaller districts don't have. Glendale's Lowe Stadium handled the large crowd on Thursday just fine from what I've heard. I think the main seating grandstand holds 2,200 with extra bleacher seating brought in on the other side of the field that holds maybe another 1,000. At Glendale, we've got a hill built up on that side as well where people can stand and see the field, which can hold another couple hundred. You rarely need anymore than 2,200 anyway. You're right, we're not a football community (historically), but I think our outdoor facilities have greatly been updated over the past sixteen years. All fields are turf now as well, which was done in a partnership with the business community, because the school system couldn't afford to pay for it alone.

Yes the addition of turf to all the stadiums was very nice I have not been to all of the stadiums in few years so my personally opinion might be outdated, but what I remember most was not to long ago all the big games were held at the Parkview stadium because it could hold the most out of all of them, the rest were all cookie cutter stadiums they all looked like a mirror image of each other besides Parkveiw and Central, but really 2,200 for home stands is not large by comparisons to a lot of the stadiums I have been to, and at taht time they did not even have visitors stands. I would say that would be about average for many class 3 schools. For the schools the size of Springfield's it is not impressive at all. Again I know you are a Springfield mainly Glendale fan. However even you are "Historically" mainly on the Basketball boards occasionally making it over here but I would say for every football post you make you have made 50 basketball. Not saying that Springfield schools do not play good football they just don't enjoy the support "yet" that basketball does. You would think with all those business in and around Springfield along with many well off people in the community that Springfield could update their stadiums a tad bit and not make them all look like each other, or is that by design?
