Don’t know what to think about this one just yet. Taking a shot in the dark...Kearney in a close one 28-24.

Openers can be the toughest games especially between top programs/teams. Both sides, from what I see/read etc., have a number of questions coming into 2018.

Kearney returns a promising QB, a near sure-fire (barring injury) all-state RB who could rival the best in program history, good OL numbers and a couple of fantastic defenders (particularly at LB). I will be watching: what they have for a passing game to compliment the aforementioned, overall defensive speed (which has been down the past two seasons) and how this team looks overall in Coach Gray and staff Year 2.

I will defer to the Harrisonville folks for their take(s) on the Cats coming into this one. The one thing that sticks out to me is how many of their top players appear to be underclassmen. Does that ever bode well for the future!

As of now I plan to drive down after work/dinner. Always love the atmosphere there!

I'm just going from what I am hearing and what I saw in the Jamboree.

Smithville, with a highly ranked QB...had three positive plays of more than 4 yards out of the 12 plays they ran. They did get a TD. Kearney had like 9 plays of more than 7 to 12 yards, and did not score, but defintely dominated the scrimmage. That being said, a good QB with a GOOD fast wide like Raytown could burn their corners and safety. But running games are going to be shut down pretty good by Kearney. The only good plays Liberty had on their were to the wides...and one bounced off a defender's hands.

I know things seem a lot more positive vis-a-vis the K Dogs this year than last. If the run D is as you say (coach Gray used to call it a fist mentality) that will be a major improvement from 2016-17. Cannot wait to see how it all begins to pan out tomorrow night!

The first game for them is actually the best test for their D. Harrisonville usally puts together a good running attack. So perfect. If they ran an Air Coryel offsense that had good wides, that is what will hurt Kearney the most.

When the 1st groups were in Kearney had 1 play of more than 12 yards and 2 more plays of 5yds and nothing other than that.

Ray South returns some very good athletes. That could be the game we see this. Gotta see Platte County minus Watt before I judge that one.

Calling it now when they play: Kearney 28 Smithville 7
Smithville returns more than anyone in the Suburban Small Seven but the league has a number of promising teams and not just on Highway 92 this fall. One I literally am hearing zero about is Grain Valley.

They only have 3 starters returning on offense and defense. It was a small class of seniors they lost: 21. But how are they returning more than others?

Let me check that out again.................

That's in line with what I heard...the backups had more yards than the 1st. This is why you really can't put a lot of stock into who "won" a jamboree. I hope that I'm wrong, but I think Harrisonville wins by at least a couple of TDs.

As you mention, Harrisonville has A LOT of questions marks coming into this season. Only returning a few starters on each side of the ball. I do not remember this much of a re-building year in a long time. Harrisonville will take their lumps the first 3 to 4 weeks (tough schedule), but hoping they can use these games to get the experience they need. All of the skill players will be new, with the exception of one wideout and one linebacker. Some returning lineman, which will be needed. Interested to see how both the running and passing game goes, as they will do a combination of under center and shotgun. Going in with no expectations this year and hoping to be pleasantly surprised!

This is why I feel they are playing on the house this year. Given how Harrisonville has a history of improving in a MAJOR way over the course of a season the early scheduling is very smart. Kearney did the same thing and it will, barring a bunch of injuries, pay off when the much bigger contests come in late October-November.
