How can Joplin not field a decent team. They have probably 800 girls in high school. I just watched them play Mt. Vernon and they looked really bad. Mt. Vernon might be lucky to win 10 games this year. I will never get that 2 hours back.

I don't get it. They don't really have anything other than rec league stuff for young girls. I know the girl who would have been the best returning player didn't play this year. She just wanted to be done with it. I also don't think Joplin cares about girls sports the way Webb or CJ do. With all of that said, they have so many girls that you would think they would get lucky from time to time.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Mt. Vernon shut down mid-way through last season? And they still put together enough to beat a much bigger school? Hmmm.

Joplin has been bad for 20 years and their teams now back thru 7th grade aren't good. I think the head coach has a daughter who is really good. I am not sure what grade she is in.

Mt. Vernon has about 20 girls out this year. They don't have alot of talent though. Killingworth will have them playing good defense but they will struggle to score points. They might win 10 games max.

College Heights and McCauley hurt Joplin. Both have had good players over the years. One of the starters for CJ last year went to College Heights until her parents moved to the CJ school district and then she started playing for CJ. She clearly didn't want to play for Joplin.

I’m not as up on Joplin area girls bball as some of you are, but my perspective is that there is an overall lack of enthusiasm and support for girls bball in the area compared to other places and not a lot of talent to choose from. And with so many towns/high schools crammed together, any family that has a talented girl and is serious about her development and college prospects isn’t gonna send her to Joplin. They’ll put her on the team/move to the district that has some talent and a respected coach which recently has been CJ and to a lesser extent college heights.

Joplin has to change the culture and perception of their girls bball program if they want to get better, that starts with the coach, parents, and youth/club ball participation at a young age.

Same thing applies to some of the SPS schools as well. Really all of them except Kickapoo. Glendale has been bad for a few years but the hiring of Powell is looking like a great one so far, he won 20 his first season last yr when they had won like 5 the yr before.

He scheduled his way to 20. They got trounced by anyone with a modicum of talent.

Well they did beat a 23-6 Rolla team. The thing is that they played basically the same teams they played the year before when they went 4-20, and they beat most of those teams last season. A team coming off a 4-20 season shouldn’t be expected to beat perrenially good teams like Kickapoo and West Plains, or much less a good Rolla team.

In fact, one could argue that their schedule was tougher last season bc they played Poo twice last season (lost by 13 and 18 pts) and only once the year before when they got trounced by 60.

They also beat Lebanon once and lost by one point in the other game. That Lebanon team had McCowan (who is doing very good as a frosh D1) and Shockley and others.

Yeah. McCowan was a player. The other 4, including Shockley, were not good. I had the misfortune of watching Lebanon play multiple times last year. One player, 12 jerseys.

6th grader, she's solid
