Jon Lester. Perfect example for the DH.

Even though he managed to do what a guy being paid $18 million hasn't done in his last 35 ABs or so, get a hit, after that he was hard to watch. That was the worst display of baserunning I've seen since my days of coaching bantam league. Heck it may have been that long ago since he was actually on 2B. But good grief that was awful. I hope the kangaroo court still exists.

Speaking of Matt Carpenter, if he were playing the field and Waino was pitching who would you DH for? I gotta go with Marp. At least Waino can get a bunt down when needed and he has a better chance of actually getting a hit. Marp has to know he's done. No one is going to pay him anywhere close to what he's stiffed the Birds for the last couple of years, if any will pay him at all. He's Allen Craig all over again. Unfortunately Mo was smart enough to see it coming.

Easy answer is Waino. Which begs the question why the hell Marp would be in the field. He’s crappy there too. The real question…If the Birds get in, do they actually give a playoff roster spot to that stiff?

OK oldroundballler, how about a designated free throw shooter for someone who can't shoot free throws?

You know they will. But hey, he's 1-2 the last two games. He's getting hot at the right time.

Now that you mention it I'm not a fan of hack-a-Shaq at all. I think it makes a mockery of the game. But learn to make a few more of them and you put an end to that. So no I probably wouldn't be in favor of the DFTS.

I'm not a fan of the DH either. At least not the current version of it. If they came up with a way to keep some of the strategic decision making in the game I might consider it. I posted an interesting thought about that awhile back.

It's the Mujica/Wacha scholarship plan. I swear, I don't get it. But heck, they might not have a better option either. At this point, I'm pretty sure I'd be willing to throw Gorman to the wolves. He's going to have to play next year regardless, might as well get a preview. And maybe if they get in he could provide some bench help. Lord knows they need it.

Carp will be on the postseason roster. Veteran, can play several positions, left handed bat.

He can go out there to any position they want. But he'll be the worst defensive player on the field and the worst hitter regardless of which side of the plate. He's hitting .107 since the all-star break. One hundred seven... Heck Lester is at .200 and Waino is up to .240. I don't dislike Marp. But he's no longer a major league caliber player. It's been sad to watch. I'd guess several guys at Memphis would be better options at this point. Getting in a position to have to put him in the field should be criminal on the manager's part. With expanded rosters in the playoffs the only reason he should step out of the dugout is to high five the guys after a win. That's of course if management is really trying to give the team the best chance to win.

Not arguing he deserves to be left off. Intuition tells me he's on the roster.
