I have been to several high school basketball tournaments this year. I have seen Christian Braun, the big kids from Grandview, Rockhurst and Lawrence High School play. Javaunte Hawkins has the best handles and quickest shot I have seen in KC basketball in a long time. The kid put up 44, 46, and 37 in games I saw against 5a schools. Several of the shots were at least 27 feet away. I know he played at MoKan but didn't hear alot about him. He reminds you of a shorter Trae Young but taller Julian Newman with how quick his handles are and how far out he shoots. I heard Creighton and Iowa State were sniffing around. Heard him and Christian are the favorites for the Direnna Award. Don't know who is going to get him but that kid can score. Looked for a rivals profile but couldn't find one. Has anyone else watched him?

The reason you didn't hear much about him playing with MoKan is he averaged three points and shot 27 percent from the field on the EYBL circuit and was mostly relegated to a few minutes per game off the bench.

I've seen him play 50 games from tenth grade to now, including both high school and summer ball, both with and before MoKan, and he's a really good player, so I'm, not trying to demean his performance this season, but to me, he is comparable to Jalen Lewis of Liberty, now at Washburn, who really carried the Blue Jays to a big season last year. Hawkins is a little bigger, but otherwise they are quite similar.

There is a monumental difference between what a talented, but undersized guard can do at the high school level, and what they can do at the EYBL and collegiate level where the competition suddenly gets significantly bigger, quicker and more skilled all at the same time.

Last I heard, Hawkins held an offer from Howard and that sounds about right. Iowa State and Creighton seem like a bit of stretch, but we'll see.

I’ve seen him play and he was off the game I was at. He’s a nice player, but you’re getting a little carried away when saying he’s the “best player in the state” considering we have two top 50 players in Love and Fletcher that are leaps and bounds better. Not to mention all the other top 150 kids that are in the state.
