It's official: Tipler signs with Arkansas State

Good move for Dereke. ASU seems to be a program on the rise, and he should help the team overcome the loss of Antonio Rambo at guard. Also, Coach Nutt seems like a pretty good guy from when I've talked to him (during my very brief stint with the ASU school newspaper).

Why is this such a good move?

It's not like they recruited him hard, which means he'll never play and if he screws up once they'll screw him. I dunno why kids go to schools that show up at the end--unless you got a heck of a lot better it means they just had a scholarship open up and they wanted someone else but you are good enough to sit on the end of their bench for a couple years. It's not like ASU is any good. To me, when you go to a school like this or SEMO you'd be better off playing at a high D-II school and actually winning some games. It's not like ASU could beat Kentucky Wesleyan. (I dunno if SMS could beat KW, but that's a D-I/D-II debate and not in this topic)

congrats to Tip! i think he'll wind up as a steal for a.s.u. if he remains healthy.

Re: Why is this such a good move?

I think ASU is a good place to go although I'd rather see him at SEMO. I remember Nutt recruited him out of high school but instead opted for a PG out of West Plains JUCO. Don't know whatever became of that kid but I bet he's not as good as Tipler. Maybe you JUCO followers can help.

sorry, SEMO's too busy recruiting backup players...

from other JuCo schools and a bad point guard from St. Louis.

Re: sorry, SEMO's too busy recruiting backup players...

Semo definately needs some serious help with their recruiting. For every stud they pick up they also sign 3 or 4 duds.

SEMO's recruiting went down the tubes when Anthony Beane left...

Remember Beane from Bernie? Oh yeah, another local product that got away. Sheesh, even Mizzou didn't get him.

You hit the nail right on the head MFloyd. SEMO had their chance to get Tipler and blew it. Instead they end up with Mike Nelke. Obviously SEMO blew that one along with many more in the last few years. I think Tipler will do well at ASU. They've got the shooting guards but need someone to get them the ball.

While I am here, I might as well add my congrats to Tipler. We have had a few players in the past attend and play for ASU.

Re: SEMO's recruiting went down the tubes when Anthony Beane left...

Nelke's not that great, but this is a team that had luminaries like Cole Grapperhaus on scholarship who were way worse than him. And also I should remind you that they recruited 3 kids this year who couldn't play for UMR. They blew their chance twice.
