The guy had a terrible year in 2016. He is a singles hitter and doesn't walk a lot so his OBP is mediocre. But he is 28, a .285 career hitter, good runner and I think as recently as 2014 he had 45+ steals. He signed for one year, 4 million. Without knowing much about his defense, seems like he could have been a nice bench addition.

I suspect he would not sign as a bench player.
 
I'd agree, he's probably searching for an everyday gig. But it we're talking 5th OF'er, you could do a lot worse than him.
 
For some reason he started hitting a ton of fly balls last year - it would be interesting to see what a decent hitting coach could do to address that.

I am not one of them, but there are a few on here that would tell you the Birds don't have a decent hitting coach.
