Is it just me, or has going for 2 become the new trend

Agreed. It’s much more common nowadays. Especially at the high school level.

I missed all the action tonight. Worked an unplanned 13 hour shift. This is my first dose of football today.

Do yourself a favor and catch that Lutheran North/Trinity game on prepcasts. It was entertaining. Let me know after if Ava or Lutheran North will provide the sterner test for Lamar.

LN is far more talented and should provide Lamar some challenges. Ava......not so much.

If you can succeed more than 50% of the time, it makes sense to go for 2. The expected value is higher.

Yeah, but who does that? I would expect it's somewhere in the 30's. To me it appears that opposing teams elect to chase instead of doing their thing and sticking to 7. That's where the value really is, getting them off schedule with you and executing better.

Maryville been doing it for ten years now. Regular season success in the 70% range.

But seems like in playoffs they get more conservative and kick PAT more often then going for 2.

Monroe City does.

Use the 2-point try only when needed; your field goal unit needs game reps just like everyone else (otherwise they might not be up to the task when THEY are needed...)

I’ll check it out this evening.

PAT kicks are not 100%, especially in high school. Two other trends are more teams going for it on fourth down and many more short kickoffs - onsides or pooch...

Carthage went for 2 after most or every td in several of their games this year. I don’t know the reason but I think it was due to a weakness in kicking. In most cases except Neosho it worked for the better or at least the same. Last night was maybe the first game I’ve seen them kick and make extras reliably all season.

My personal opinion of the LN/Trinity game is:

Sloppy game on both teams accounts. It wasn't penalty-ridden as I thought it would be, but both teams just didn't play well offensively. Turnovers, turnovers, and more turnovers.

If Lamar plays LN, it should be interesting.
Lutheran North appears to have a pretty stingy D-Line & offensively, they're a power run team that throws if they have to.
They ran double wing, single wing, split back, I believe I also saw some unbalanced line from them as well.
BUT, I don't know if they're going to be physical enough to compete with Lamar.

Trinity was a much more physical team, and I honestly think they played better defensively than LN did.

But, offensively Trinity was a disaster that game. They had 3-4 really nice passing TD's, but at the same time, their QB was panic prone and threw multiple INTs and some of them that the LN defenders didn't even have to work for, they were literally thrown right to them.

Too many mistakes. I think Trinity would have given Lamar more problems than Lutheran North but they played the worst game they've played in over 2 years this past Friday. It happens.

As for Ava, I'll be honest, I've only seen highlights this year, but one thing I will say is this: they won the SCA conference and are undefeated and that is no easy task with that schedule.
outside of Trinity last year, the winner of the SCA(who is almost always the winner of District 3) has given Lamar their best games in Class 2 in the recent years. IMO.

2015: Lamar 14 - Mtn View Liberty 7
2011: Lamar 33 - Liberty 18
2010: Lamar 21 - Liberty 20

I'm not saying that because Liberty has given them good games over the year that Ava will, but Ava won the SCA and they play a very physical brand of football and use 3-4 different backs all game long. Should be a good game, will probably won't be a lengthy game due to the lack of passing from both teams I would think.

Excited for this match up

That 2015 game was a classic.
perhaps you didn't see my second post Cards lol.
What are you referring to?

Now I know you did see it. Nevermind.

I wish I had more insight into Ava, but they always kind of fly under the radar. Even when they have good teams. I'm pretty sure I heard that this past Friday was their second district championship ever? (that's what happens when you're always in a district with Grove, both teams are usually either Class 2 or Class 3 during the same cycles, usually)

One thing I will say is Ava and Grove both usually seem to have more of a home field advantages than most teams I've seen....

So interpret that however you so please. aha

I haven't seen Ava play in person since the fall of '09 when I was there @ Ava as a sportswriter for their opponent's local paper

Trinity had zero coaching - their scheme consisted of chuck and blitz like the old games in the backyard. That guy is a good recruiter, terrible coach.
