I said it 3 months ago. Our #3 hitter has a .239 average. What other team in baseball is that sad? But hey, we are saving a ton of money.

On the other hand JD Martinez hit .299 with 13 bombs in May. In every other month this season he hit over .300.

You seem to forget, no one cares about BA anymore.
They shouldn't. But lemme help...His OPS is over 1.000 for the season. That's really, really good. And a much better stat than just BA.

Take Segura and and Duffy for example. Both have been at/over/around .300 most of the year. Neither are anywhere near the offensive player of Martinez. Not even close. But, hey, they hit .300.

My point in this post was to demonstrate the incredible consistency of a guy who was available in the free agent market and is what you want in a 3-4 hitter. The biggest series of the year and we had a .239 hitter back in the 3 hole. So much for Shildt magic. Its gone.

Segura obp .338. Ops .751
DeJong . .311. .766
Duffy. .361. .727

If any of these dudes is batting 3, 4, 5 in your biggest series of the year you are not a serious contender. Arguing over whether batting average is important is a waste of time. DeJong is not a 3 hitter. Period I can tell this by watching the games and being completely ignorant of what his silly arse numbers are. But .239 tells you how often the mofo gets hits, which I think are kind of important in the 3 hole. I was bitched out on this board for being "negative" because I said Pete Kozma sucked 4 years before they finally released his arse. You can tell a lot by watching.

Try to remember Ducky the Birds were looking to improve their Def. so it made no since to look into Martinez since they had their sights on sore armed Ozuna which they claimed they knew when they traded for him (uhg) and had Dexter and Martinez as defensive wiz in RF (uhg).

This is two consecutive years as one of the worst defensive teams in the league. The term "Cardinal Way" is an embarrassment.
Having DeJong bat third and Gyorko 5th against Hendricks just shows how weak and out of balance our line up is. The league caught up to all the rookie pitching so that strategy fizzled. Bottom line going into 2019: No 3-4-5 hitter on the roster. Bad defense. Still not enough speed. We owe Fowler a fortune and cant get rid of him. The plan for the future will be "The guys we have will magically improve".

Middlle of the order hitters? Where have I heard that before? OH yes it has been the last 3 years where we have fallen short of the playoffs.

Machado and Harper but those are guys the Birds will tell us they came in 2nd place for, so probably nobody.
Anyone else remember when we were told that a new stadium with more luxury booths, etc., were needed in order to bring in enough money to go after “big named free agents?” Or did I just dream this? This finishing second stuff is for the birds ... pun intended.
