I thought Republicans were for States Rights?

There is zero reason to mandate GMO labeling. There is no science that supports paranoia about GMOs. Mandatory labeling is a waste of cost and effort. If products want to say they are GMO free and that is true, fine. But there's no scientific evidence backing any sort of mandate.

Yes and cigarettes were fine for decades.

Monsanto's researchers say GMOs aren't going to hurt anybody. I guess we should all take their word for it. Stop it. It doesn't cost that much to simply say GMO on a package.

You can choose to believe Monsanto if you like. If you have done extensive reading on the tactics Monsanto has used vs farmers, you would know that mistrust of that company is not paranoia. That is very insulting.

All of the above post, unfortunatly, prove you have NO understanding of modern food production.

That's fear mongering nonsense. The government should be using facts to make decisions about regulation, not paranoia.

Plenty of credible, nonbiased scientists agree with this.

I think the government should start doing what the citizens want. Pompous people call it populism. I call it democracy.

Exactly what does GMO mean, when does the label go on?

And you think its easy???? LOL

I shoot a little pellet behind the ear of every calf that is a growth hormone. When that calf gets hauled to the Joplin Stockyards and sold with 5000 other feeder steers next Monday how in the dickens are you going to be able to tell which animal has a growth hormone and which doesn't?? Much less when it gets to the feed yard, slaughter house, distribution center or Wal Marts.

When a barge full of soybeans is going down the Mississippi River how are you going to tell which beans came from Roundup Tolerant varieties and which were grown with other seed varieties??

You guys are clueless

the parties need to save us from ourselves sometimes. GMOs are a great example of this.

Better safe than sorry may be a cliche for you, but it's sound policy for others. Have they proven that long term consumption has no effect? Well hell no.

20 years from now, when it's suddenly divulged that something everyone assumed was safe and we all trusted freakin Monsanto of all companies...insanity to trust those bastages.

And my bro has been drinking zero calories artificial sweetener laced diet soda for years because it helps you lose weight. Oh wait 25 years later there is a lot of evidence these sweeteners don't help you keep the weight off. But let's take Monsanto's word for it. What the hell.

Remember when Monsanto said Round up was biodegradable and leaves the soil clean?

Or when Monsanto paid fake protestors to pose as Pro-GMO food demonstrators?

Or when Monsanto conducted a campaign to pressure Nature science journal to retract a paper showing GMO corn had contaminated natural corn varieties in Mexico?

The FDA is being run by former Monsanto execs. No conflict of interest there, Huh.

Hillary's campaign chair in Iowa was a Monsanto lobbyist. That gave me confidence in her.

Yea I trust the research. Not.

As Hillary's mentor Henry Kissinger once said "Those who control the food supply, control the people."

So you would rather we go back to farming like we did 100 years ago, yields go down by 50%, prices triple and half the world goes hungry or starves to death.

Do you honestly think the UNITED STATES FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION is taking Monsanto's "word for it" ?

Do you know how many years, and how many million's of dollars go into getting a new product approved? Do you know how many new and improved products could reach the American people but don't, because it takes too long and is too costly to get through the red tape?

GMO is not as scary as some believe. We in the industry have been Genetically Modifying our crops and livestock for hundreds of years. It is a sales pitch, just like "antibiotic free". No studies have concluded in any way that feeding livestock antibiotics has any detrimental effects for human consumption. But due to the uninformed masses, laws are being enacted to combat a nonexistent problem. Who will ultimately pay for this? The consumer.

The FDA IS MONSANTO. Are you a chemist? HOW THE HELL DO YOU REALLY KNOW THE LONG TERM EFFECTS OF GMOs? Do you spray Round Up on your garden since its biodegradable according to Monsanto? Oh wait.
Make sure you feed some of those veges to a pregnant relative. Any moron who believes a word Monsanto says deserves to suffer the effects of their products. The rest of us deserve to know where our meat comes from, if products are truly organic and if the GMOs which are going to kill your grand kids were used in the production of our food products. The food producers are now pressuring the FDA/congress to try to lower the standard for what is called organic.
DO YOU THINK THAT IS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE CONSUMER? GIVE ME A BREAK.

Use your GMOs all you want. But give me the right to choose non GMO products by properly labeling every one.

Yes, I do spray round-up on my garden, as well as my driveway and everywhere else I want to control weeds. The rest of your post doesn't warrant response.

I would say nearly everything you buy in the grocery store is GMO.

Why don't you just assume it is, and grow your own. That way your unfounded argument won't cost everybody else extra money.

To me, that is an argument for regulating GMO products, not an argument for labeling foods which contain GMOs. If you really believe they present a material danger, what exactly is labeling foods going to accomplish for the average American family?

No one is saying we have to trust Monsanto...there is plenty of research into GMOs at universities and other institutions on GMOs that supports the general conclusion that there are no known human health issues associated with GMOs. It's not like cigarettes where the health community had data it could point to that showed the product makes people sick.

The real concern with antibiotics is that rampant overuse among the food supply and also by humans is causing bacteria to become resistant. That is a real concern that is grounded in science.

You generally already have this choice, though. Go walk through the supermarket, there are tons of products in every aisle labeled non GMO. You don't need government intervention to find these products.

At this point, it's pretty safe to assume that anything that isn't labeled is very likely to have GMOs in it.

I understand the thought process on this, and believe that it could happen. I know of no scientific study to date that shows this is the case however.

Check out @SenSanders's Tweet:

Name those 3000 ingredients and their harm to the human race and I will give you and the old nut a second look .

He didn't say all 3,000 "harm". But denying the right for people to know what is in their food is the most fascist a-hole stance I can imagine. Why put nutrition info on labels? So people can make their own informed decisions! Why deny that?
