For Divisions 4A and down to 2-1A there are 4 team districts for the two 8 man divisions they have 5 or 6 team districts. Top two teams in each district are in playoffs. Staring this season 6A and 5A have switched from this setup. They now play a 8 game season instead of 9 and every team is in playoffs. Hope this article from KC Star explains it for you. http://www.kansas.com/sports/high-school/article20090058.html
Have to take in account of leagues. Example 4A Fort Scott plays it's entire league schedule in it's non district games along with now non league game with Pittsburg. Pittsburg since it's 5A playing as independent to get more 5A games to help playoff position. So like many schools 4A or below none or only one game to schedule after required league and district games. For 6A and 5A most teams already in a league with comparable schools and league games take up 7 games. Wichita City league (9 teams) going to 6 league game schedule so Western Athletic Conference teams (4 teams) can get more 6A- 5A games. KC area Sunflower league had a week were half the league played comparable size teams for Missouri side Suburban league.Pittsburg since in SE Kansas no other close 5A traveling more including Webb City and Harrisonville, comparable size Missouri schools. So not many creampuff games.
