If I had to bet I'd say 6-3 but 8-1 wouldn't surprise me either. A loss to WC is all but certain. After that it's a combination of Carthage, CJ, or some unknown sleeper in the COC.

WC allegedly graduated a ton but that rarely matters. CJ is without Weston. Carthage graduated some exceptional athletes but returns the QB and I'm not sure what else. I haven't heard anything about the rest of the conference.

Seems like the team with the least unknowns is the team the COC knows the least about.

Anyone know what Joplin is bringing back??? Looks like 26 Juniors and 36 Sophs

What does Joplin have returning upfront? We all know about the young skill kids but just like the OC, everyone has good skill kids in this league. I think the biggest difference between OC and the COC for joplin will be the play of the big guys up front.

I'm with cardsbeatwriter. I'd say a 7-2 or 6-3 is possible but 'playing on another level' will be dependant upon the workhorses. The kids who DON'T typically do touch down dances in the end zone. These are the kids who work their arses off in the offseason and in the weight room to NOT make the highlight reel.

Week 1 @ Willard...when was the last time Joplin played a football game on grass? Hope someone can look this up.

I think they could go 5-4 to 9-0. I think they may be capable of having a real good season. I feel the difference in the two leagues may be the defense played in the coc is going to be better but im not 100% on that. Im not sure if the line is all that big but I think seem to play well together. Its fun to guess about how Joplin will do but who really knows. I know this its gonna be nice to go to Carthage as an away game and have are long away game at Branson instead of rolla west plains or waynesville

Heard Willards coach on ESPN radio tonight ....he said his line is much smaller this year but 4/5 are over 290# . Crazy how big they always are

Honestly think Joplin will only see some short term success over the next year or two before fading to the bottom 3rd of the COC consistently. Appears several of our recent contenders will be in reloading seasons just as Joplin may be having peak years in recent memory.

I think Joplin will be pretty good the next two years. Anything after that .....who knows ? They seem to have a good coach and numbers look to be up ....so it looks promising

A team as big as Joplin playing schools significantly smaller can/should build on the success they can have over the next 2-3 years. Win 7 or more games the next 2 years, get kids excited about playing local teams (instead of Lebanon, Waynesville, and Rolla), winning will recruit for itself.

I’m from here and went to Parkwood when Joplin was split into two schools. Until the general mindset of the entire fan base changes from everything is always against them to being more supportive into building a winning culture

If there was an opportunity to make a culture shift it's now. New conference affiliation that includes renewed local rivalries, a trend towards winning over last few years. Awesome new school. New coach that seems to be getting some good buy in. Plus increasing rates of participation when the sport overall seems to be declining in many places. They are trying some new things with how they organize sports across the middle schools, which may or may not work but it at least shows they are not content with where they are now and are trying creative strategies to position more success. They have had some large crowds at Junge, something I don't see at a lot of places these days.

Joplin was rich in athletic tradition at one point and it seems possible that could return if they could just improve perception more than anything. It would go a long way if the district could just manage to stay out of the local media spotlight for negative things like tragedy, scandal, lawsuits, etc.

The junior class at Joplin should be very strong. I think 2018 and 2019 they could be very strong. After that they jury is out. I can see Joplin winning 8 games.

i think they will make some noise in districts. How much I dont know but they should compete well. Playing Webb, Carthage, CJ, Nixa Ozark etc.... should help prepare them mentally for districts.

Im going to nit pick your post. Ozark did have a good record two years ago but they are under .500 as a program the last 5 years. For comparison Willard is 33-23 over the past 5 years. I believe that in the COC in the past five years you have

Over .500
Webb
Carthage
CJ
Nixa
Willard

Under .500
Ozark
Branson
Republic
Neosho

The COC has several schools that have been respectable in some or most recent years but playing these teams, even Webb City is not going to prepare Joplin for districts much if any more than the OC.

To prepare for a tough class 6 district they need to play tough class 6 competition in the regular season but that isn't practical. I think joining the COC is the best move they could have made for their program overall. I think it's good for everyone else too.

Spot on. I know this has been hashed time and time again but in my opinion and many others this is a two high school town and just won’t see substantial athletic success as one school. Too late to fix it, so I hope they can pull it off.

I'm excited for the new conference and the crowds that I hope to see. WC will bring the town on week 2 and I think Eagle fans will show up because like the Yankees or Patriots, WC is a team that has had success like we all wish ours would and we all love to hate them. I expect it will be a crowd size that Joplin players haven't played in front of for years. Predicated of course on a Joplin victory on the road in week 1 that is not necessarily a given. How many more days do we have to wait? Bring on some HS football!!

Joplin has some good home crowd but its about to get real hopefully. I hope the local towns pack the house home and away. This will be more fun than we've had in years. It will be a learning experience for the Joplin fans also, The fans from Webb Carthage etc... get decked out shirts hats the whole thing.

4-5, everyone thought CJ was the next great thing. Going from OC to COC is a different animal. You better be ready every week. NO easy game on that schedule. Branson is my sleep this year.

Carl Junction was really only one better fourth and one referee's spot away from sharing the COC title their first year, eventually losing by 3 to Ozark and a single score to Carthage and ending with a 7-2 regular season.

I'd say Joplin jumping from the OC will have them more ready for battles every Friday with big schools than CJ leaving the Big 8.

I have said pound for pound the Big 8 is as physical as any conference. CJ was used to that mentality but had not seen the size and strength of the bigger schools in the coc on a weekly basis. They obviously did okay.
Joplin on the other hand has seen the large bodies but may not be mentally ready for the tenasisty the coc plays with physically. Will be interesting to watch but in the long run I think it is a lot to do about nothing. These are 15-18 year old kids who are resilient. They will figure it out quickly.
