How did this happen?

I haven't had time to read everything, nor do you know what to believe, but with the huge Trump rally and confirmation of Biden on the same day, plus inauguration coming up shortly, how was the Capitol police and security so outmanned? Not blaming the police at all, but they were obviously outnumbered and could only hold on for so long. How did that happen in our nation's capitol? What if the Pentagon or White House was stormed?

I saw an interview where an officer said that most Trump rallies were peaceful and that law enforcement just under estimated the possibility of insurgent antagonists in the crowd. One individual who was caught had been at numerous BLM, ANTIFA, Biden, and Trump rallies just to stir the pot. It only takes a small crack for a Dam to become compromised. Sad day for sure

I guess so. I'm not one of those crazy conspiracy theorists, but something just seems funny about how they were able to breach our Capitol building. Obviously scary.

Well the national guard had been activated and was on standby. One thing I didn't know and is not talked about much was that it was only Trump however who could in the national guard, because well it is DC no governor. So it took some time to convince Trump that the guard had to be called in. I think that is why you are seeing people resign they saw something in those few hours that they realized that Trump does not value others the way he values himself.

I know a few people who went there in support of Trump, they said many Trump supporters were well armed and had military vest on many were ex military. You have to wonder if the Cops were thinking could we win in a shootout with these guys?

I also wonder if this might change the way Dems view the police now, it sure looks different when your place is being attacked and you feel your life is being threatened versus just watching it on TV...

We value the police. I know several great men who are police officers.
Defund the police is a great policy with a terrible slogan.
If we could spend some of the funds that pay the police for social workers to cover some calls, that would be nice.

When this is all investigated I am sure Hillary will finally be locked up. as well as Obama. I have never seen so many white ANTIFA and BLM members in one place.

Trump did NOT call in the guard, the pentagon people we're calling Pence to get the go ahead for the guard to get in on it. Trump was busy watching the TV coverage.

I think that is the 64 thousand question and hopefully the answer will come out. I cannot believe that any rational person in charge of something like this on the national stage could have anticipated that there wouldn't be any problems. Plan for the worst.

Totally agree. I get that MAGA rallies typically seem to be non-violent, but with the time frame and boiling point we are at now, to think that things would be just fine is hard to imagine. It surprised me the windows and doors weren't more sturdy as well.

I agree with some of this. I’d hope more funds would be spent on our police forces, not less, to accomplish the following:
1) Stringent psychological evaluations to weed out those who are unfit to serve
2) Increase salaries to attract a larger pool of candidates

Maybe “restructure” instead of “defund.”

Great points. The common sense thing would be to re-examine how things are done, quit wasting resources on chasing marijuana users, things like that. I do think if we had better mental health care in our country that would help. God bless any law enforcement officer nowadays. Wow how they do it is hard to imagine.

A 5th victim, a police officer, died overnight from injuries during the siege. I would think that with all the people recording, someone would have the attacks that killed or injured on film. I can't imagine the level of violence inflicted to beat someone to death. All efforts should be made to find the responsible people and murder charges filed.

I heard that his injuries were from getting hit in the head by a fire extinguisher that someone threw. Negligent homicide at a minimum?
Just read this....
NEW: The DC police officer died after a Trump supporter viciously beat the officer over the head with a fire extinguisher until he was dead. This happened in full view of other police, who allowed the assailants to then enter the House chamber where lawmakers were sitting.

Thanks, I hadn't heard that. Tragic loss of 5 lives. Trump's last words before Twitter banned him were "This is what you get."

Will there be hours of congressional hearings on this?
4 people died in Benghazi, 5 people two days ago.
I am sure the Republicans will be in favor of calling people in to defend their actions over this.

I’d heard this, too. Has this been verified?

I have heard it Both ways and one was from somebody I know in the Military...However here is a timeline. So it does look like the first reporting blaming Trump for not acting to call it in was wrong.

Quote from article;

The theme of another tweet basically boiled down to "this is what you get if you steal an election," which is obviously not the best way to calm the situation, not to mention steeped in the type of nonsense conspiracy theories that resulted in today's violence.

I also heard that Pence was the one who called for the NG. But also heard that the Secretary of Defense had to ok the Maryland NG before they could show up. But it sounds to me like the Capitol police were expected to be the first line of defense in planning for this.

I haven't heard anything different all day and some were talking about how sad it is that MIlley felt the need to talk to Pelosi about it. She is not in the chain of command for that kind of thing but I guess he couldn't trust those in the WH.

In our paper today Gov. Parson said no one should be blaming Trump for anything that happened at the capitol. o_O

This from Heather Cox Richardson blog that I follow:

There are also questions about law enforcement. While exactly what happened remains unclear, it has emerged that the Pentagon limited the Washington D.C. National Guard to managing traffic. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser requested support before Trump’s rally, but the Department of Defense said that the National Guard could not have ammunition or riot gear, interact with protesters except in self-defense, or otherwise function in a protective capacity without the explicit permission of acting Secretary Christopher Miller, whom Trump put into office shortly after the election after firing Defense Secretary Mark Esper.

When Capitol Police requested aid early Wednesday afternoon, the request was denied. Defense officials held back the National Guard for about three hours before sending it to support the Capitol Police. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, a Republican, tried repeatedly to send his state’s National Guard, but the Pentagon would not authorize it. Virginia’s National Guard was mobilized when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the governor, Ralph Northam, herself.

And it took some time for the Nat Guard to leave traffic control and get in riot gear to return to the Capitol well after the breach.
