Once everyone in the league saw them a couple times all the hype they got was the typical BFIB BS. Flaherty's ERA in Sept was over 6. Weaver threw fewer strikes than Stevie Wonder at the bowling alley. Gant is nothing special. And dont start on Gomber's plaque for Cooperstown any time soon. Yea. Hello 1970s.

Down the stretch, every contending team made deals for veterans. But not STL, once again a 3rd place team.

Where Kershaw ain't been so great.

So I take it you prefer not making the playoffs. Tis better to finish third and enhance the ball park village than have a disappointing playoff series.

Never said any such thing. The examples you give don't make them win when they get there. I guess you want to say we're great, we got to the playoffs? How do you expect the Cards to sign any big deal players when most folks on here say NONE of them will sign with the Cards regardless of the offer? It ain't because there is no history of the Cardinals being in, and doing well, in the playoffs, even recent history. If it's because the lights aren't bright enough in St.Louis how will get them here?

Here is how. You pay them a boat load of money and surround them with good players. If you build it.....they will come.
This Waino thing is nothing but a setback for signing free agents. Time to move on to a new era.

I think Matheny moving on is probably a help. It's not like there wasn't a stigma around the league with MM and his WASP boys club. The bible thumping helps with clueless parents, but doesn't necessarily resonate with the majority of today's professional athletes...Couple that with the negative media stories on STL (Ferguson, Rams leaving...seemed like all you heard in national media on STL for a while), and it kind of created a perfect storm. Not the most attractive place to be. I think BPV helps that image. Maybe I'm naive.

They offered Pujols a boatload of money to stay, they didn't even have to try to convince him to leave somewhere else, but he left for the bigger money while saying it was NOT about the money. They have offered some pretty big $$ to others that didn't stay, or come and nearly everybody on here said "they won't come to Stl for any amount of money." I said if the money is right they will come and most again said they will NOT. NO one said oh yeah throw lots of money at them and they'll jump in. So is it the city, the top management, who the manager is what is it that makes them shun the Cardinals?
Now they've dumped Oquendo from 3rd base. I'll have to say the defense did NOT get better when he came back like we all thought it would but he has always been a good guy to have coaching 3rd base.

I didn't get the feeling they dumped Jose. They had to talk him into it this year. I'd say pay was part of that. He wasn't interested in the manager job anymore. He doesn't like the traveling anymore either. He has said he likes living in FL and working with young guys and wants to go back to that. It's hard to blame him. Hopefully Stubby comes on up to the big club. He's proven to be a winner at every level.

From the sound of the article, Clapp will either be the hitting coach or 1B coach. This all assuming he doesn't get a big league manager job. Interviewing for Toronto, and I'm sure one or two others. Pop going to 3B, Buddha stays as hitting coach, Marmol going from 1B to bench (Pop's old gig), and Greer going back to the minors (hate this, btw, but I get it). Leaves asst hitting coach and 1B, depending on what Clapp does. I really would've liked to have seen Oquendo with a year under Schildt. I wonder how frustrated he was trying to work with MM. My guess is greatly.
