Let's play devil's advocate to signing Harper or Machado. Which I don't think is a thing anyway, but just humor me. Say the Birds go out and sign Donaldson, Pollack, Joe Kelly, and Britton. All would probably be 3yr deals. Britton might get 4yrs and Donaldson might be able to be gotten for 2yrs...but you get the point. Shorter term deals, that have risk (bullpen deals and oft-injured position guys) but upside too. Still not committing a ton of money, and certainly not long-term deal that could get ugly.
Lineup...Carp, Pollack, Donaldson, Ozuna, Dejong, Molina, Wong, Bader
Bench...Kelly, JMart, Gyorko, O'Neill, Munoz
Rotation...Mikolas, Martinez, Flaherty, Wacha
Potential 5th starter...Gomber, Reyes, Weaver, Hudson, Gant, Poncedeleon, Waino (sigh)
Pen...Kelly, Britton, Hicks, Brebbia, and the above guys that don't win the 5th spot
I much prefer an option such as this.
