Has it ever been explained the reasoning why the HS Hashes are so much wider than college or pros? I go back and watch a lot of games and just wonder how different the HS game would look if they were changed? I've always been curious about this and didn't know if anyone thought it would ever change?

I would love it if high school hashes went to the college width, or heck, if they all went to the pro standard. This is an interesting read: history of hash marks

It was designed to not wear the hell out of the middle of grass high school fields because most schools can’t afford big time grass maintenance.

I wish it would have changed when I was calling plays. It makes it too easy on DCs.
I know they need the help, but still.

The officials of the Seneca at Reeds Spring game placed the ball on the college hashes all night long. The big plays were the on-sides kicks by Reeds to start the second half.

Lots of big plays in that game. Both teams put up huge offensive numbers.

That has nothing to do with it because before hash marks, they would mark the ball wherever it was down, even if it was right by the sideline. They would have to adjust their formations for this, of course. I would argue that playing the entire game between the hashmarks causes way more field maintenance issues.

That was my entire point. Tight hash marks like college and pro would have torn the hell out of the middle of grass fields.

Oh, I get it. I don't think it would make that much of a difference. Just a slightly smaller slightly more worn patch of dirt in the middle of the field.

I always thought it had to do with body sizes of players. Bigger bodies in the pros and college than are on (most) high school fields.
