What happened to the coach at MAC? Head coach leaving to be an assistant at a D2 makes little sense.

If Luke was making anything near what Heier is set to make ($50K), I'd imagine he'd make pretty close to the same at a D2. And I'd imagine, while D2 isn't exactly glamorous, it's probably quite a bit more comfortable than bumbling around the JUCO world...But, for the record, North Dakota State is DI. Summit League member. Which pretty much makes the question void. Unless you want to consider having to live in freaking Fargo, ND. Dear lord, that just seems about like living on the North Pole to me.

I should’ve know it was D1. Follow the football team during the playoffs. Went to Fargo last September. Needed to get ND off our states visited list. Pretty nice place. Comparable to Columbia in size. Maybe 400 difference. Got in the Fargo Dome but the field was covered for a jobs fair. New guy took a big cut in $.

Man, Fargo would be like a prison sentence for me except for 2-3 months of the year. I bet it's gorgeous right now though. I just couldn't do the snow, cold, and wind. From people I've talked to really say it's a nice place. And their athletic programs are pretty successful.

Heier needed someone to take a chance on him. MAC was desperate enough evidently. He's not unfamiliar with the JUCO world. Won a natty at Chipola or NW Florida I think, just before taking NMSU job. But MAC ain't exactly Chipola either. Little different recruiting base.

Heier learned from the best as far as his behavior at NMSU. Eustachy, Marshall, Wade...add to that all the years spent in JUCO. I'd say if he bombs out at MAC he could probably get a gig selling used cars at Sapaugh pretty quickly.

Strege leaving so late was a bit of a surprise. But I'd heard he wasn't happy with available resources. There's not much budget for assistants. But Fargo.... He must have been a little more disgruntled than it appeared. I was impressed with his recruiting and coaching. He usually had good players who were well mannered and disciplined. Certainly a little different than in the past. And they played pretty well for the most part. Nearly all went on to D1 somewhere. But it was usually a whole new team each year and that made it a little hard to be invested.

Some folks in the area aren't that thrilled about the Heiar hire considering his recent history. But the guy has won big in Juco. It'll be interesting to see how it goes. I don't really expect him to stay very long. But last year may leave a black eye for awhile so you never know. He has already earned a little goodwill by signing a local kid first. It's obvious he knows how it looks and is trying to get ahead.
