Helmet game changer...new tech.

Hope it works and then the cost comes down enough for high schools to be able to afford it.
Reducing head injuries and concussions should not be difficult or expensive. Helmets just need to be much larger to allow for more impact reducing material instead of just conventional padding. Would players use a helmet that is 2" thicker than what we have now??

Helmets can only do so much to prevent concussions. They’re designed to prevent fractures and reduce blunt force trauma, but there’s little that can be done to prevent concussions caused by rapid deceleration. The brain floats in liquid and strikes the inside of the skull, causing bruising (a concussion). Sensors can detect the forces likely to cause that deceleration, but nothing can really prevent it.

Maryville high school getting some of the latest technology in helmets next year.

Starting last spring when Northwest Missouri State University committed to a full roster conversion to VICIS helmets, Webb began his search for a way to provide better equipment and improve safety for his players.

Maryville is one of the most prestigious football regions in the country, earning the nickname “Title Town” due to its rich history of success, according to a VICIS news release. Northwest has played in 10 NCAA Division II Football Championship games since 1998, winning six titles, while Maryville High School has appeared in six state championship games over the last decade, winning four titles.

“More important than our achievements on the field, is our commitment to protecting our athletes,” said Webb, in a VICIS news release. “Football is a big part of our identity as a city and we are proud to be the first city to completely embrace the ZERO1.”

I don’t think any of this will truly stop stop the brain from bouncing around inside Your skull, there’s no helmet for that. Call me crazy but footballs concussion problem will be taken care of the day they get rid of helmets all together again or at least get rid of the face mask and make the shoulder pads much much smaller on the shoulders.

I remember “back in the day” or early 90’s when my football coach would preach lower your head and drive it through their chest. That seemed to be the norm back then. We had concussions but the means to test for them wasn’t what it is now. I believe its all about muscle memory. Older folks like, like myself that’s what we were taught. I think with the rules and penalties players are more cognizant to hit with their shoulder now. Concussions will always be there but in my mind the coaches are doing what they can to teach the proper way. Hopefully these helmets can help reduce the impact injuries. And I hope the price can come down to allow some of the smaller school afford them. Cool post and video.
