WEST PLAINS, Mo.– The Southwest Missouri State University-West Plains (SMSU-WP) Grizzly basketball team has signed its first freshman recruit of the 2004-2005 season.
Head Coach Brian Ostermann announced today that 5-11 point guard Tyrone Brazelton of Chicago, Ill., has signed and returned a national letter of intent to attend SMSU-WP on athletic scholarship.
"Tyrone will be a very good point guard for our program," Ostermann said. "He has a great passion for winning and and great leadership skills. He's very quick and explosive, and he has great vision of the floor, which is a necessity for a point guard."
The 170-pound product of Rich Central High School in Olympia Fields, Ill., a suburb of Chicago, averaged 14 points and six assists per game his senior season and helped lead his Olympians to a 22-8 record and a regional title before losing to the eventual Illinois Class AA runners-up, Homewood Flossmoor High School of Chicago, in the sectional championship game.
Guided by Brazelton on the floor, the Olympians won the SICA South Conference title and the annual Big Dipper Holiday Tournament at Bloom Township High School in Chicago, one of the season's biggest tournaments in the Chicago area. Brazelton earned most valuable player honors for his efforts in that tournament.
He also helped lead his team to a No. 6 ranking in Illinois Class AA poll by the Associated Press. Individually, he was named first team All-SICA South Conference and was selected to play in the annual Legends vs. Seniors and the City vs. Suburban All-Star games.
Brazelton will join returning sophomore Torrington Cox, a 6-6 forward from Inagua, Bahamas, and redshirt freshman Daniel Narancich of Monett, Mo., on the Grizzly squad.
Ostermann said Brazelton's signing will be the first of several similar announcements that will be coming in the weeks ahead.
