'Grats to da Kenkster...

So let me break this down. I have a one month old and 4 year old sleeping in the back bedroom when the final drive starts. I tell the wife it's over, but she can tell I am agitated. After Digg's catches it I am telling him to run out of bounds, after seeing the DB go down. Didn't realize he was the last DB. I have nothing else other than being a Vikes fan it's been a long road of misery over years. This was AWESOME

Congrats Kenny56...Just curious, tell me...how does a guy who grew up in Ste. Genevieve, Missouri grow up as a Florida State College Football fan and a Minnesota Vikings Pro Football fan? What is your connection to each?

Well Don,

There was not an STL team when I grew to watch the NFL, Carter, John Randle, Doleman, McDaniel etc.. fan for obvious reasons. I wasn't going to switch just because STL got the Rams. And didn't switch when they won the Super Bowl.

FSU I am pretty sure I've explained to you before but I'll just simplify it to watching them on TV and Mizzou wasn't. Same reason a guy that lived in Northern Texas became a Cardinals fan and not a Braves. Exposure. Guess when I got to my later years I could have switched. I root for UCM, I mean after all I actually WENT to that University.

Unfortunately my football career did not take me to the land of 10,000 lakes or else I guess I would have a legit connection?

Do you have any other questions? Were my explanations up to par?

Kenny. thanks for the reply...wasn't being a smartass...really just curious. Your explanation makes sense.

As for me, I grew up 19 miles from Columbia in Callaway County and Mizzou was great in the 60's (Mizzou was the 9th winningest program in the Nation when I was a kid all during the 60's).

After Devine left...we were very up and down but really exciting to watch during the Al Onifrio's "Giant Killer" years and during most of Warren Power's era in the 70's and early 80's...just stuck with them through the down times.

Larry Smith put together exciting seasons in '97 and '98 and then Gary Pinkel brought us back to prominence from '07 through 2014. Mizzou will always be my team.

NFL wise I was a St. Louis Cardinals fan (until they bolted) and a Chief's fan. Tried rooting for the Rams but it never felt right and after the Super Bowl run they became down right dreadfull the last 8 years or so before they bolted. I'm a Chiefs fan now...but much prefer College football over the NFL.

HERE is a great link that shows where College Football Programs rank and even has a decade-by-decade link which is interesting: http://collegefootballnews.com/2018/01/ap-college-football-rankings-greatest-programs-of-all-time

If Mizzou's Administration had properly supported and funded the football program after Devine left...we could have possibly maintained elite status...they way they turned their back on the program for almost 20 years was almost criminal...definitely inexcusible.

We have been playing "catch-up" ever since...

I was slightly being a smart-ace, but it was because I was asked that question a few times over the last week by people(assuming I hopped on that sinking ship wagon).

Honestly I am sure I just liked the uniforms the Vikes had at that age. But I was a huge John Randle fan. Out of my two older brothers only one is a huge football fan anymore(the other a disgruntled Rams fan). For every bit of a Vikings fan I have been he is equal or more of a Bronco's fan. I've unfortunately have been to a Vikings game and watched them lose in five different states.

My brother and I made an effort to travel to games over the years(although more him than me). It's been fun. I don't have a huge investment with the Cards although have been to 100's of games in my life. Same with the Blues. But the Vikes are MY team that I have stuck with through thick and thin.

For FSU, it really was that simple. And contrary to belief on this board I support MU. From 2005 to 2009 I went to a pretty good amount of MU games, and even more tailgates. My first football game in person that wasn't a SG game was an MU Alumni Day game with my Aunt. I believe around 93-94ish. But they were never on TV back then. We literally got channels 2, 4, 5 and sometimes 12/30.

My wife and I were talking about how funny it is when grown men are entranced with sports. My Dad(and his family) really were not sports people, they thought the time could be spent doing something more productive. My mom's family were huge sports people(all Saint Louis Catholic School athletes etc.). My Grandpa was a huge Cards fan. Anyway, we were talking about how it means so much to so many people. There were only two explanations I could really come up with. The first was it somehow takes the adult back to their youth. Which is very possible. I remember playing tackle football in our yard with my brothers during the halftimes of the games. Or hurrying up and unloading the truck of wood dad brought up to the house, so we didn't miss too much of the game. And then mom always had chilli for dinner and it was one of those rare occasions we got to eat it in the living room. The other is I believe its a nice distraction for the rest of life's problems. My son was just into the game Sunday night as I was(until bed time came). It was awesome. And I truly believe that is the reason so many adults take such a passion for such sports.

I just hope I am not dragging my family into the pit of misery with me, being a Vikings fan.

That is great stuff. I agree about "taking back to childhood" and also it is something my dad & I, now my boys and I can watch and enjoy. (or get your heart ripped out - CHIEFS) But sports crosses the generation gap. My boys do not like the same music as me, we differ on what is a good movie, we may not differ on great movies but we do on good ones. But not sports, we can all cheer for ......a team. I admired the Vikes when they were a power and just could not win it all, same with the Bills, but my dad was a Chiefs fan and now they are my team. When they were playing bad during the mid-season slump or mid-season reality my 12-year-old says, dad can we become Vikings fans?" Of course, I made him sleep in the barn with his goats for a few weeks (NOT REALLY, I mean he does raise goats but did not have to sleep there.) So after the Chefs lost I told him he could certainly pull for them. During the 4th Qrt he says, "this is as bad as being a Chiefs fan" - then IT HAPPENED, the worst defensive play in the history of NFL playoffs and BAM, Vikes move on and have an excellent shot to defeat the Eagles. Have a great evening gents. I meant to say, when I asked my boy why the Vikes he said, "well they have a good defense so that works for you dad and they have really cool uniforms."

With much less technology in our youth and the Chiefs not existing or being brand new when most of us were kiddos? I would imagine many of us have teams in our childhood that don't play in Missouri. Some of us made the move and some of us didn't. Love those stories!!! Some of the best days of my life were days with NFL by radio or not knowing who won a game until the paper came the next morning.

I dig these stories, especially for guys my age or older. I'm 42. When I was elem age, we had 3 channels. NBC, CBS, and ABC. Spent first 10 yrs of my life in southern IL. NBC affiliate was WPSD in Paducah, KY. Showed every single home UK hoops game. I watched, loved, then saw Rex Chapman play when I was in MS. An infatuation was born...Football wise, I loved rooting for the Golden Domers. They were always on, and my grandpa HATED them. I liked taking the opposing side. Never really had any connection to college football. I follow UK religiously now. But that only became easy to do in the last 5-10 yrs...NFL, I've always been an STL homer. Dad was a season ticket holder in the late 70s and early 80s. Loved those Cardinal teams. Man they could score. But were heartbreaking too. They left and I became a Cowboys fan. Bandwagon as it gets, but I do remember the 1-15 season. Then the Rams came to town and I immediately jumped on board. Loved Bettis. Then they got good, I lived in STL at the time, and it was awesome. Then they sucked, and left. And now I'm sort of a Cowboys fan again. To say my heart was ripped out both times the teams left would be an understatement.

I am telling you right now, listening to MNF with Hank Stram and Jack Buck on radio was absolutely as fun as it gets. Buck set him up beautifully and Stram told you what was going to happen before the snap.

Buck could give you everything you needed to know in such a fun and concise way without boring you with stats you dont care about.
