I think some members of this post are temporarily forgetting that this is the best college post on the internet. It is truly a great site. I can understand Coach Barr's friends supporting him, however I do not believe the college had a viable choice.
Doormats are appreciated. It will be great to go into SMSU and blow them out by 30 or so. All of the region 16 teams will relish the sport. Maybe their fan base will be small enough that they will be able to spare some decent seating for the victor's fans. Let us all look forward to a great 2004-2005 of basketball!
Tom have you considered talking E.Central into starting up a bb program?

The scoop at

East Central is never going to happen, or at least not in the near future.

The program, along with most other sports was cut due to the budget. The President doesn't fully support athletics, and doesn't want to pu the needed resources to even have a DII team.

I was the last coach there. We had a bad season, and I'll take the blame. But, here was the down low on the situation.

No food or housing in scholarships. I raised money for some help towords the players, but not enough to compete when recruiting.

Head Coach Part-Time ($5000) and President would not allow the coaches to work on campus. Assistant $1200. I had to work full-time somewhere else to put food on the table, etc.

Limited Budget, example recruiting was $500.

There was no institutional support past the athletic department. The school didn't want to drop to DII to match their funding in basketball. The coach couldn't be on campus full-time like other coaches in the region. There is no on-campus housing, etc.

Coach Barr always did a good job. I hope he finds something he would like to do in the near future. But, with the current trend of doing what is ethical and within the rules, the school seems to have no choice but to let him go and start over. I would expect the same from all other schools in the region.

Good Luck Coach Barr and to the Grizzlies program.
