Two of Missouri's historic programs are slated to tussle on Friday. One-time Public High League powerhouse Sumner travels to Ste. Genevieve to take on 14-time state champion Valle Catholic. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Sumner (1-3) has fallen on hard times the last two decades, but its four state titles and five runner-up finishes are more than the combined total of semifinal appearances by the rest of the PHL.

Under legendary coach Lawrence Walls, Sumner won large school titles in 1973, 1982, 1990 and 1991. It made three consecutive Class 4A title games between 1989 and 1991.

One-time state gold standard Jefferson City had to go through Sumner to win its first state title in 1976.

Valle Catholic (4-0) has 14 titles to its credit. Last season its run of three consecutive Class 1 titles came to end.

Valle's Father John Dempsey Field is as unique a venue for football in Missouri. It's adjacent to a cemetery.

Valle lost a scheduled game when Grandview was unable to field a varsity team this season due to lack of numbers.

Webb had couple of great games with Sumner. In 89 was the biggest lines on both sides of the ball I ever saw.
