This happened in a game I did this season. Team 1 attempted a 57 yard field goal that was about 30 yards too short. It was not blocked, but te ball was touched/downed at about the 30 yard line. I don't remember which team downed it. The defending team took over on offense at the yard like where the ball was touched.
Is the correct if the opponent/defense downed it? If the offense downed it, was this correct? Just wondering what the high school ruling is.
Thanks!

it is considered a punt but you can return it and at that distance I would have had a guy back there to get it

When I was in high school (at North Callaway) we tried a 35-yard field goal with a few seconds left the game...down by two points to Centralia

The field goal was wide left...so wide it actually went out of bounds on the 6-inch line.

Centralia had to snap the ball from the 6-inch line with only seconds left in the game and our NG tackled their QB in the endzone for safety...tying the score at 8-8 on the last play of the game.

True story... this was in the fall of 1971.

A field goal attempt is a by definition a scrimmage kick, just like a punt is a scrimmage kick. If the ball is short and does not cross the goal line it is live. The defensive team can pick up the ball and run with it just like a punt return.
