Midseason is upon us as teams begin the downward trend towards the six-week long postseason now just a month away. Big stories for this week include:
1. Gateway STEM? More like Gateway STE; Gateway STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) are clearly not the mathematical prodigies that they claim to be. In an upset loss to Melbert "Mel" Carnahan, Gateway passed up obvious opportunities to kick the no-brainer PAT going just 1-for-4 (that's a 25% F) on two-point conversions. In the 30-26 loss, both teams scored 4 touchdowns apiece, but due to some poor math by Gateway's special teams coach, they were unable to fend off a late comeback against Carnahan. In addition to mathematics, neither engineering nor technology seem to be at the forefront of this school's mission as they are forced to play in a virtually bleacherless stadium in front of a delipidated old school building. That just leaves science and given Gateway's penchant for inaccurately describing themselves, they might as well be known at Gateway School of Marine Biology given their close proximity to the ocean. Perhaps a rivalry with Cleveland Naval Academy could ensue?
2. Brentwood VS. Bayless? These two schools simply cannot get enough of one another as they face off for the second consecutive week and the third time this season. Brentwood improved its scoring output by 56 percent the second time around while still holding Bayless to just 14 points. An early season 39-14 victory turned into a 61-14 whopping last week. Can we expect the same percentage increase this week with a 95-14 Brentwood victory?
3. Hazelwood East announced an early end to their season after a 26-24 nail-biter victory over Lift for Life Academy. Lift for Life masqueraded around as the so-called "Saint Mary's Dragons," but this false pretense did not fool the citizens of Spanish Lake as Hazelwood East came away victorious. Will 5 straight bye weeks be too long to keep the #5 Spartans ready come playoff time in May?
4. Soldan International Studies, kings of the west, welcomes a team from the eastern half of the state as Confluence Prep makes the grueling four and a half mile journey to the west. Soldan stays in the Saint Louis bubble once again and has therefore been downgraded to Soldan Domestic Studies. The nearby Soho lofts ought to be teeming with Soldan fans this weekend sure to catch a glimpse of the game from their balconies.
