Anyone have a favorite or noteworthy local sports radio announcer in your part of the state?

Over here in Franklin County, John Covington and Glenn Mechem have been calling some great basketball games on KLPW for at least 25+ years.

Stuart Johnson at KAAN (Bethany) can make a 65-7 beatdown (Mercer girls over NE Nodaway on Monday night at the South Harrison tournament) sound at least somewhat interesting.

With more than 5,000 games under his belt, Greg Schmidt at KMMO Marshall is smooth as glass in his delivery. Great tempo, not pauses or "ummmms" in his delivery. He trained me on my first day of working in radio (NOT in play by play) in Sept 1983 in Lexington, and had been doing it for several years then.
Tom Johnson of KTTN in Trenton and Chris Ward at Cameron also do a great job.

Greg Alan at KFMO radio in Park Hills, Mo is fantastic at play by play and could be working in a much bigger market. Sean Malone at the same station is also an outstanding talent.

Greg Allen and Mike Reeves are the best duo in our area, HANDS DOWN! I would venture to say that I'd put them up against anyone in Southeast MO, if not the entire state!

Is that radio station nicknamed “The Boot”, or is that another radio station? Occasionally, I’m able to get 98.5 up here in Washington. Always thought the (young-sounding) guy at The Boot was pretty good.

No. That’s a competitor. KTJJ. Malone used to be at that station. They do have a large listening area.

KTJJ has one of the most powerful signals in the state. They do a lot of local sports. But the guys at KFMO, a small local AM station 1240, are the hardest working group in the high school sports business. I can't tell you how many games to do a year but during basketball season they'll do 3-4 games every week and nearly all of the local tournaments. They cover almost every sport and give even the Monday night small school girls game between teams with losing records the same effort and enthusiasm they do the finals of the Christmas and conference tourneys. They'll easily go over 100 games it could be way over that. They're very active on Twitter with up to the minute updates and have a dynamic web page that covers all the local schools. Greg Allen is the driving force behind it all and doesn't receive the accolades he should for how much coverage and promotion they do for high school sports in the area. The only negative is the station is low power and has a small coverage area. I sometimes wish they were on their FM sister station, B104, so I could pick them up further from home. But that would cut into the Cards and Blues games of which that station carries nearly every one.

And no I don't work for them or have any vested interest. I'm just a fan who appreciates all they do to support and promote high school sports.

I just wish we had ANY station in the semo area that would cover half as many games/teams as KFMO, KJEFF and KTJJ do. We're lucky to have a game on the radio around here at all. Doniphan carries their hometown boys and girls when they don't conflict, PB has a station that only carries PB boys games and it's not on a station that gets out much either. I think they cover Twin Rivers boys games some too The only other sport they cover home and away is PB football. We have one that carries all the 3R men's games, and the women when they play the same night and same place, that gets out about 50 miles on a good night. Guess the folks up that way are more willing to buy ad time for the games to be on the air.

Well said. They are still branching out. They have done some volleyball and I think I heard the other day they are doing some wrestling. I know they did 8 basketball games in one day over Christmas.

I don’t think any station in the state does more HS games than KFMO despite its limited range. During football season they did games all over. They did a game between Fredericktown and Ste Gen even though the station doesn’t reach either town.

Another night there were storms and technical difficulties in Park Hills so Mike Reeves announced a game over his phone from Perryville. Those guys are hustlers.

They been doing the entire opening round of the Christmas tournament for awhile. I'm not sure how Greg's voice holds up that week. They also do VB, baseball, softball I think, and of course football. Not sure about more but wouldn't be surprised. Those guys are never home on weeknights. We know they're not getting rich doing it. They just love what they do and we reap the benefits.

They start in the fall with softball, football and volleyball and end in the spring with baseball and spring softball. They do about 250 to 300 games a year.

They put in some long days and nights during the PH Christmas Tourney and MAAA conference tourney for sure. I read they're doing wresting now, that would be a tough thing to call and you better have some knowledge of the sport if you're gonna do it.

I am a friend of Greg Allen and Mike Reeves through my coaching days and going to college with Mike. I am also one who believes they do an outstanding job.

Through the years when I was on the road I have enjoyed listening to local coverage of football and basketball as I traveled in and out different coverage areas. I was very fortunate to listen to a number of really knowledgeable and professional sportscasters, many of which have been mentioned on here. On the other hand, I have had to suffer through some real homer stinkers who spoke mainly in cliches; cited only the number of the player involved in the play, if even that; seldom described the play leading to whatever they went bananas over; never acknowledged opposing players for a good effort; constantly criticized the officials on calls that went against the home team or for failing to make a call that would have benefited the home team; and, thought that yelling at the top of their voice was the only way to express appreciation for a good play by the home team.

All of the foregoing became even less bearable if they happened to be someone who spoke like he had a mouth full of marbles, had never even heard the term enunciation, or sounded like he tuned up a little too long at the local pub before going on air. I could only listen to that type for one reason.....no other place to get the score. Today, you have many other sources that you can consult so you don't have to torture yourself. But, one good thing about that type is: they really caused you to appreciate the good ones!!!!

I am and have been guilty of what you mention over my career. However, I broadcast the team that resides in the town I work in, featuring only advertisers from the town I work in, and our coverage area doesn't stretch to the opposing team's town 99% of the time), and no revenue is generated from the opposing team's town.
The general public should remember, broadcasting local sporting events is a business first and foremost, just like the grocery store, car dealership and insurance office. I know the home town kids, their parents, their grandparents. Guys doing softball, wrestling volleyball, that's great. It's also a way to generate revenue for the radio station, and to become a bigger part of the community, thus generating more revenue.
Earlier this week, I did a game at Marshall and one of their players set the school career scoring record. I made mention of it on my broadcast which doesn't get to Marshall. I congratulated him on the air. After the broadcast I went to him, offered my congratulations to him and shook his hand in person.
Opponents want a shout out from me? do something special and you'll get one.
I am not a professional sportscaster. I am a rabid fan that someone mistakenly gave a live microphone to 30+ years ago LOL

I sincerely doubt you were ever that bad or you would never have accomplished 30+ years in the business.
We all realize the business aspects of which you speak and the real pros do not necessarily hide their affiliation but they at least suppress it in the name of good journalism and a more quality broadcast. I have never known any advertisers to complain about a quality broadcast even if the home team lost. JMO

Well said KCHI!! I'll listen to any high school broadcast while on the road. I even get a chuckle out of Uncle Billy Bob doing color. Lighten up, Missouri Kid, and be thankful that there are still radio stations carrying high school sports. They are becoming fewer and fewer.

Ha! I like Uncle Billy Bobs and some do make me chuckle but most make me cringe.
