How did St. James get the 4 seed? They are usually one of the better teams in their area and conference.
Did they lose a lot of players?
They did graduate a lot of talent but they have 2 sophomores this year who played large roles on last year’s team. IMO the best shooter was a freshman last year. St. James never has a rebuild year with that pipeline starting young. Youth programs are always great and constant winning too.

That's a pretty good field. I do question whether St. James is seeded too low. I would probably have them at 2 or 3, but these season opening tournaments are always tough to seed.

Helias and Fatima played this summer and went to 3 OT's ending in a summer game tie. They seem to fit where they are at. St. James definitely could of been the 3, their best player is returning from an ACL tear, and I'd say some of the familiarity from a few of the new schools in this tournament, cost them a spot in the voting.

Anxious to see if the girl from Helias (Koelling-sophomore) plays a guard/wing like she did this summer, or if because of her height Helias puts her in the post.

Not 2 but 3 sophomores this year
Also 4 freshman on the varsity and 2 will play a lot

There’s no magic wand for programs that are always consistent. They will always have a good mix of kids from seniors to freshman. Keeping that mix keeps them stable, consistent from year to year, and competitive in practice.

not saying that a big class won’t show up from time to time but generally speaking it’s a mix.

2nd round will be played on Wednesday

1) Helias vs. 4)St. James
2)Fatima vs. 3)Steelville

8)Smith-Cotton vs. 5)Moberly
7)Cuba vs. 6)Sullivan

The way St James and Helias play will make for a fun-to-watch game. Both teams are able to get up and down the court! This could be an very high scoring game. This game could possibly come down to who can keep their players in the game and out of foul trouble. The good news is that both teams are very young.

The fresh guard is good. She will grow into her role. Unfortunately, she is not on the roster for this varsity tournament. I think she is on the 6 person JV team that is at another tournament this week.

That’s a Crusader win ! Helias girls beat St. Jame 53-51 to advance to championship game of the Fatima tournament.

1:40 left in the game Helias up 48-45 over St.James.

1 H 3 F
1) Helias 4 15 42 53
4) St. James 11 24 36 51, 1st loss

rematch in Sullivan?

I could watch these teams play again! Great atmosphere. St James had a player out for an ‘issue’. Once she is back this game will be exciting to watch, for the 2.0 version.

St James face guarded and doubled Helias’ star, and held her for a bit. Helias did not try much in the first half to get her open to get her the ball.
Really impressed by the young talent on both these teams. This was probably the best matchup of the tournament.

3rd place-St. James over Steelville 59-37
5th place-Moberly over Cuba 65-45
7th place-Sullivan over Smith-Cotton 55-51

Would of expected a closer 3rd place game, and looked like we were going to see one in the 3rd. Steelville played without their All State Guard Perkins after a scary collision on Wednesday took her out of this one also. Steelville missed a lot of easy ones to start out, and dug a huge hole down 22 @ half. Had it at 11 with about 30 seconds left in 3rd after finally adjusting to some of the St. James pressure. A sloppy last few seconds saw a foul and a buzzer beater 3 happen, to make it 15 going into 4th. Pretty even for this quarter until Steelville tried to press the issue and got out of 131 to go man with about 3:30 left, with another starter fouled out, they couldn't keep up with St. James man to man and the final got back to 22. Had the 2nd half been a zero to zero start, it was a fun one to watch. But that's why they play all 4 quarters.

Made the drive up to Westphalia for this one and it was one of the better high school basketball games I have seen in a very long time. Both teams traded buckets all night long. Both teams had big runs followed by big answers.

Helias is as talented as anyone in the state. The three-headed monster of Manns Koelling and Edwards is just hard to contain for an entire game.

Fatima is one of the best shooting girls teams I have seen in a while. Really did not think Fatima had a chance without their post player but their floor spacing with the shooters is impressive. Gives the Robertson kid a lot of room to work.

After reading your comments I was thinking the Helias and SoBoCo match up would be a close one but Helias got dominated at home. Helias scored fewer than 10 points per quarter. Of course SoBoCo had just won the TCC tournament rather easily against a decent field so they are not to be taken lightly.

Southern Boone is looking like the real deal. That district is still wide open in my opinion, but Southern Boone has made a strong impression early on.

Helias certainly looked out of sorts.

We have already said this but we can say it again - District 9 is brutal. Another "district of death" scenario for some really good teams and programs.
