Half of the football teams will end their season tonight. Is there any rule that says they cant continue to practice until the season actually ends on Thanksgiving weekend?

As limited as practice time is now during the summer it would give underclassmen a full month of practice time to work on getting better come Sept of next year

I am not sure of the actual rule. I always thought, though,. it was more like College. The actual season ends tonight. Those that advance just get an exemption and are allowed to keep practicing as long as they have games coming up.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is as long as the season is still going any team can keep practicing even if they are done playing games. I know Kirkwood and Webster Groves still play the Thanksgiving Turkey Bowl game.

Why not give the kids a well deserved couple of weeks off. Then they can be mentally ready to move on to their winter sport, or lift/core/agility work in preparation for next season. Post-season practice would really be like busy work in the class room. I just cant see the benefit of beating a dead horse. Just my opinion.

Why not let the kids that play winter sports have a week of before they start their winter sport practices, but continue to use the time to be able to put on the pads and work on things for those that don't? Then give them a couple weeks off and get them back in the weight room for winter, spring, and summer. Theres a lot more time to lift than there is to actually strap a helmet and shoulder pads on.

I don't think those type of games are allowed anymore, outside of Kirkwood/Webster Groves being grandfathered in. Don't remember who told me that though, so I don't know how credible that is...

After being eliminated in the first round of districts, why would you want to continue your season with practice? First off I don't think you would get very good practices out of them as no one's hearts would be in the task at hand. If there is not a rule to turn in the pads, their should be! lol

I am not sure of the rule but I am guessing it wouldn't go over well with the players, parents or coaches of winter sports. Seems a bit too excessive. These are not college scholarship players they are HS players who either need to focus on school or get ready for their next sport.

KWood and WG get to keep going until Thanksgiving because they always have a bye week during the season.

Agreed with when you loose your last game, be done. Let the kids move on to other sports or take a break. With all the summer contact days, camps, etc., by the time you loose that last game, enough is enough IMO.

Players play because they love the game. The Turkey Day game usually has more in attendance than most football state title games in Missouri. I have been to a few in the late 1990's & early 2000's, big crowds and exciting football environment. Football, family & turkey!

I remember a few years ago a coach of ours telling a story about when (after a season ending loss) he saw a sign posted on his freshman sons bedroom ceiling that simply said "we will never lose. Well they never did. For those kind of kids there isn't another winter sport and they never take well deserved weeks off

I'll say this. Tennessee high school football used to have bowl games for teams that didn't advance to playoffs but have .500 or plus records. It was one final game and a reward for a good season.

Maybe I'm in the minority on this, but I think we need to remember that these are high school KIDS and some of them have lives outside of football. Once the season is over they should take a few days off and then prepare for winter sports if necessary. Let kids be kids.

Let them play as long as they can. You can always play softball, basketball, or run in some race later in life in some adult league. Very few get to strap on the pads after their senior year of HS.

Season starts way too soon. Season was half over second week of September. It's just now feeling like football weather.

When I read the initial post, Kirkwood/WG was the first thing that immediately came to my mind.

has an extra month of practice helped Kirkwood or Webster groves? dont see them winning championships year in year out.

People moaning about when the season starts is beginning to get a little comical

your allowed to keep going till the end of the season which is the state games, most don't, wg and k leave a open week so this would be their official 10th game, if they make it to state the jv play

Kirkwood and Webster Groves Varsity teams are playing today according to St Louis paper.
