EVERYONE (and their brother) still refers to the class systems as 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A

lol...what are we ten years removed from dropping the "A"?

hugely important stuff I know!...but we should change it back to how it was

The "A" was dropped in the 2002-2003 school year.
The 1A through 4A came about in the 1968-1969 school year for football only as that was the first year of a state championship in football. Football was the only sport with 4 classes at the time. Most other sports only had 3 classes labeled L, M, and S and prior to that it was A, B, and C. All other sports with enough schools involved went to the 1A-4A in the 1973-1974 school year.
Now you all can sleep well tonight, but I too agree is is easier to say 1A than Class 1.

Was alive but had no knowledge of the L, M, S class system. Thanks.

Sounds like a Mercedes ad campaign to me.

Basketball went to S, M, L in the 1955-1956 school year when they went from 2 classes to 3. However, their class structure - it went by number of schools - was different than track and maybe some other sports which went strictly by enrollment numbers. Until 1964 in TF, the top of C was 200, the top of B was 500 and anybody larger was A. In the 1964-1965 school year TF went to the same class structure as basketball and went to S, M and L.
Until the 82-83 school year, when FB went to 5 classes, every sport followed the basketball cutoffs with the those with less than 4 classes combining classes at the bottom.
That ought to put you to sleep but following Mr. Duck, most states use letters because of their ease of use in the newspapers.

Heck Missouri use to have undefeated teams not qualify for playoffs.

Marshfield was undefeated in 1977 and didn’t make the playoffs. There were others. If you played in a conference with several smaller schools, it killed you.

Not really concerned with the history of how and why the a was used.....just bring it back because people are too dumb to know that it was dropped and again, everyone still uses 1 a 2 a 3 a 4 a 5 a... when I hear a person actually say class 1 class 2 class 3 etc I know I am at least talking to someone who isnt a neckbeard

Since the Amish probably do not post on this board nor play football, I guess neckbeard refers to Harley riders or ZZ Top members. Wait a minute, those would be throat beards. So neck beards would be what?
