I have heard East Newton might drop football they have been outscored 390 to 26,
There is no educational value for those poor kids to play and to be humiliated every
Friday, comes a point where the school board has to take a stand for their kids.

Stand for the kids? I hope they're paying the coach well to put up with the kids incompetence!

seasons like that are not unheard of. When I was covering the MRVC in the late 80s / early 90s I remember Knob Noster scored just 14 points the entire season one year, and gave up nearly 500. This was a couple years either before or after they were in the show-me bowl (I'd have to look it up). During that same time my alma mater Higginsville one year lost every game by 40 points or more. (That was a rather difficult weekly interview to do). The Huskers seem to be doing well these days.
Some schools from time to time run into a string of classes that just don't have football players. Good luck to East Newton, hope you stick with it and that your fortunes will turn around.

they were in the semis in 07 and since then im not sure if they have won 10 games total. its hard to get a coach to want to take on a job like that and its even harder to get kids to go through all the weights and 2 a days and practices just to know that you are going to have a turbo on ya to start the second half. its disheartening to say the least(i was on the 07 lamar team so i know what it feels like). there was talk before the lamar game that they might just cancel it and the rest of the games this year because they only have 13-14 kids. from what ive heard they had 9 freshman on the team. if they could get another 8 or 9 freshman to play next year and the sophomores stick it out together maybe they can get a decent team together for 17 but thats gonna be a long shot. i hope that things turn around cause i would hate to see that program hang it up

They should either only play a freshman or jv schedule until they can build the program back up or try to get into a conference with smaller schools. They have no business playing any of the schools in the Big 8 anymore.

I too feel the pain for them. Historically we've had programs like this. I disagree that there is no educational value and the kid's are "poor kids" or victims. Hats off to those that have stuck it out.
Do we cancel the baseball programs at inner city schools because they can't hit, or field the ball? Do we cancel girl's basketball programs that haven't won a game a 5 years? No, hell no. We roll up our sleeves, hang in there and teach and support the crap out of the kid's that want to play!

East Newton is hurt by being class 3. When they were class 2 they could have changed conferences. C3 and they really don't have a choice. How far is the school from moving back down?

This is a program with a proud tradition. I saw some great football at the newt. They had great community support. Their fans traveled well. Well coached, hard hitting, the Patriots were always a force to be reckoned with in the big 8 and the postseason.

Enrollment wise they are bigger then Lamar and are basically the same or bigger then : Seneca and Mt Vernon. They had a big population of Hmong students move in 8-10 yrs ago and it inflated the enrollment into class 3 but they are still picking from the same pool of athletes they did when they were class 2. Couple that with a down cycle of athletes they have really hit hard times and I truly feel bad for them. It wasn't too long ago they were year in and year out a top team in the Big 8

10+ years ago they had players like Alan barber and that real good little quarterback. At a smaller school a couple real good athletes can change the face of the program pretty quick. If I were East Newton instead of dropping football I would probably suck it up and move into the diamond Lockwood conference. Gain some numbers gain a little confidence they can always move up. It won't help your numbers or your confidence getting beat bad every week

Does anyone really think Lamar just had a spurt in athletes? Did Seneca just run out? Cassville? The list could be a page long of schools like Jeff City who were either untouchable or depressingly bad and a coaching change ended it. Camdenton, Warsaw, etc., etc.

When you have a program at the top year after year, the coaching is the constant not athletes. When you see a program rise from the ashes, there is a great coach behind it. EN just needs a good coach committed to it. When they were good, they had that.

I agree with that my point was more that the years they were real good that quarterback started since he was a freshman and then you have a couple good players around him that means an awful lot to a small school. Plus I'm not sure East Newton was ever all that good but just in those four or five years maybe three years. If somebody knows I'm curious I could very well be wrong I just don't remember them having Great teams year in year out under any coach.

No one (I hope) is making those kids play football . Dropping football is not standing for the kids that want to play it.

All that said if East Newton wants to waive the white towel that is their call.

The Desmet coach is a hall a fame coach he has won 2 games in 2 years they give up 60 points a game. They have lost enrollment is why. A coach can only do so much you thank Webb City would win every game if the administration and the town didn't support it. Coach helps but the administration has a lot more to do with it. That is why I say the school board should do what it takes, play independent ball in football, play 8 man football do what it takes somebody that says oh have them just suck it up are you kidding me or lets support them as they get humiliated NO the answer is the adults step up and do something
about it. So many options to help kids but turning your back and saying ridiculous things isn't it.

Not meaning to be harsh here, just want to be blunt: *I am not considering CJ as a conference school in this post*
East Newton is NOT planning to drop football. However, they are against the Big 8 expanding to 10 teams.
The problem is Monett is the only town in the conference with a solid enough job base that district enrollment is increasing. Aurora, Mt. Vernon and Cassville are close enough to Monett to siphon a few jobs and have enough local base to maintain their school numbers.
Granby and Seneca are towns that will hold on to their citizens, but aren't going to dramatically increase in size over the next 10-15 years.

These are the realities that our conference must face.

Are these the realities that the conference must face or towns like Monett and CJ? We are about the only other town along with CJ that has grown. Other schools in the conference don't want to expand as they have seen little increases in enrollment, will there be a time when the Cubs might have to look for a new home if the others want to live in the past?

East Newton Youth football seems to be on the rise, just like everything this is a cycle couple that along with a few classes that don't have kids in that want to put in the work to be successful and well you get the mess that the Newt is in now. My how things have changed since they let Ellis go.

Why would they be against adding two schools, especially if they are small schools and not large ones? Unless its a travel deal and until you know who the potential candidates are, you wont know that.

Be surprised more schools then the Newt are voicing concerns, and not just because of size I have heard it makes it harder to get all conference awards, so not good for current members. Be interesting to see what happens for sure.

Before i was born you would might have been called a fool for that statement but in todays everyone gets a ribbon society that actually makes some sense

I doubt anything will happen they said the same thing about them in the early 90's.

I'm not sure the exact years but, I think East Newton won 10 district championships in an 11 year stretch. Approx. 1992 through 2003. Larry Bunn was the coach and I believe that they made it to the semifinals a couple times. They ran an offense that was very deceptive. It was almost impossible to follow the ball. Larry Bunn was the master of trick plays. They were fun to watch.

The Big 8, as we know it, will not be the same by 2018. It either adds more schools or it will lose schools to other conferences..this came from a Big 8 AD. Don't doubt me on this.

". . . Larry Bunn was the master of trick plays."

I think his response was, They're not trick plays if you run them every week, you just need to do your homework!
