This morning the scroll at the bottom during sports center said "Haren dominates as Cubs blank Cardinals.".

If you have been following baseball for longer that 15 minutes and you saw that sentence on your screen you know this team is very bad offensively. Don't be all shocked and dismayed when they score two runs as the sum total of whatever playoff series they lose.

This offense is a pop gun offense but I do believe it is a little better than last years and we were close last year so I refuse to be all doom and gloom, but I won't be surprised when we get eliminated in a low scoring series.

This is the same "pop gun offense" that recently scored about 30 runs in a series. There are many ups and downs in a long season. Maybe they come out of this and maybe they don't, but another HR guy or two wouldn't have fixed ANYTHING that's happened in the last few days. Like Ozzie said when he was in the booth tonight, better to have this bad stretch now than in October. Only time will tell.

Well a little life left in the boys tonight.

Tell that to the Mets. Cespedes has made their entire lineup better. You probably think Larry Bird was just one man. One man can change everything.

Wacha and Martinez were rolling. Nice job disrupting that Matheny. Damn genius.

Problem is, that offensive explosion was the exception and not the rule for the season. Of course, the same could be said about the poor pitching lately. It was obvious, if the pitching struggled at any point, this team was going to be in trouble. But I agree with you and Wizard, glad it's happening now and not in October. Just hope it gets fixed before then.

In the last 24 games the Birds have lost 3 times when the opponent has scored 5 or less runs. They've lost 6 times when giving up 7 or more including 4 of the last 5. They've won 6 times when scoring 7 or more. They've won 9 times when scoring 6 or less. The highest average runs per game in the league is 4.5. Scoring 7 or more isn't the norm for any team. Let's face it, no one is going to win many games in which they give up 7 or more.

I say all that to say this, you don't win without good pitching. While no one really expects a team ERA under 3, if our pitchers just keep us in the game I like our chances. And regardless of the last few games, I like our pitching. They've proven all year to be reliable. Not just one or two guys, nearly ALL of them. When they get back to holding teams under 5 runs we'll be fine. And if they don't our offense won't matter. No team can survive having to score 7 runs a game to win.

I get the feeling that this pitcher missing a start is MO's master stroke not MM. Look at Wong and Honny MM rode them into the ground
