The Sticks of Missouri
Just like the day after a Super Bowl on Sportscenter, we have to start thinking about next year. Any favorites to return to Columbia, or up and comings we should start to put on our radar? Or are there any schools making the jump...rumor has it Stanberry is going up and Scott County is headed back down...

Class 1: Glasgow and Walnut Grove were pretty young, and I'd say that they have to be favorites out of their quarter. Winston loses a key player, but they are always solid...so probably the favorite. SE: Advance/School Ozarks, SCC?

challengers I'm aware of: Worth County, Jefferson, North Andrew in NW region...

I'm sure I'm off (and just don't know a lot of the regions of the state). What Class1, 2, and 3 teams will be back...or their time has come?

NW- North Andrew is being discusssed by many as the favorite....
chasing closely....Winston, Worth County, Jefferson, Braymer
possible joining them? SJ Christian...and ????
If Stanberry stayed Class 1 they would be in this list still.

NE....Glasgow has a lot back.....Mercer is a chaser....and bring back the Meadville Eagles with a youth movement. (Mercer could get go back to NW with redistricting)

Coach Meinder's Walnut Grove will be a contender again...

someone else can fill us in on School of Ozarks, Advance, etc

School of the Ozarks will still have a good group but they are going to miss the older Martin, as well as Tillack, and Dolloff. Will win plenty of games but will not have near the depth. Unlike other private schools they cap the size of each class and they are close to capacity so don't expect an automatic reload of the troops. Jerry Martin is a good coach and will have the group in contention.

NW Region Knowledge:
North Andrew, Worth County, and Winston. Early favorites in class 1 NW region.
Wellington Napoleon and Hamilton (Penney) should be favorites in class 2 NW region.
Stanberry should still be solid after losing 4 starters off their state championship team.
Jefferson will also be in the mix as always.
Braymer loses one of the best players they have ever had but return talented underclassmen.
Class 3 - very tough to guess on this one. A public school has not made it to the state tournament from the Northwest region in a decade (Cameron 2006). Maryville however will be extremely solid. They return basically the whole team. Eli Dowis is a freshman for Maryville who saw himself get more minutes as the year went on. Led them through some of their district games on their way to a district title. A combination of him and Tyler Houchin with their talented junior class - they should be in for a fun season.
With that being said I understand Jeriah Horne graduated, but how could you ever count out Jacob Gilyard. One of the best talents I saw this year. I watched him hit Lafayette up for a dozen steals or more leading them in scoring that game. (Lafayette is in the class 4 state semis this week).

Glasgow was pretty young. They should be in the mix again.
I do not see a scenario where Walnut Grove is not in the mix. Very talented underclassmen. Still wondering if the younger Meinders kid will be as good as his older brother? Either way with Thomazin and Gilkey back they should be solid.
Little knowledge about the southeast.

I glanced at your previous posts "you don't know me"....you mentioned that technical in the Championship....thought I would weigh in on that.
I thought the officials could have just ruled WHITE ball and that would have handled it.
I was seated in a spot looking right up the sideline...I didn't think it was in fair play...but
will concede it was purposely caught (not to cheat though).
But did you see how fast Coach Meinder's hands still are? That guy is lightning !!!!
I heard in HS he was a black hole with his offensive skills.
ha ha. DM was just frustrated at his player's pass and the game status....credit the stress Stanberry put on their opponents.

In the heat of the moment, it's definitely hard to know exactly what I would do in the same situation...but they are competitive and it seems they just play for wins however they can get them. That article posted in the other thread makes it pretty clear how they conduct themselves...again not saying I would be immune to it either. And, his hards were lightning :)

This video always cracks me up :)

The class 3 NW region had a public make the finals after 06'. Hogan prep is public & they made the finals in 08,10,11 & 12. Then the private schools took over from there.

HAHA! I wondered if someone would say something defending Hogan for being "public". If you want to get technical then yes Hogan Prep Charter is listed as public through MSHSAA website. You can put that behind your name and get a little public funding thrown your way. Hogan is still a choice school. For instance if you live in Maryville you have to go to Maryville public school. You can choose to go to Hogan in KC though. When I said that, I was quoting an old superintendent I knew from the Lawson area about the public schools not going for a decade. Ask any NW Missouri administrator if Hogan is public or private and 10/10 will say they are a private school, but get to list themselves as public through MSHSAA. If you are from Hogan tho and want to consider yourself public then whatever makes you sleep at night! But Hogan is a choice school... private.

sorry but Hogan Prep is private as well
I teach at & coached boys basketball during that time at Hogan & it is not private. It has not been private since 1998. They except all students that live in the KC public school district.
If you don't know what you are taking about don't post false information.

You can't live outside the KC school district & still go to Hogan. You have to show proof of residency (Utility bill, phone bill etc.) within the KC district to attend the school.

Pretty clear cut! Private you pay out of pocket to go to that school & you can live anywhere even in other states but if you pay the tuition or get a scholarship you can go to a private school.
A college prep or charter just means it has an affiliate that watches over the school to make sure it is providing the right education so those students are ready for college once they graduate high school. Students of college prep do not pay to go to school there. They have to live within the defined school district to attend that school just like non private students do.
The only difference between urban & rural is the quantity of students & quality of athletic ability. Yes charters are a school of choice. But if you have a choice of attending an accredited school that gets you ready for college as opposed to a "public school" that is unaccredited which school would you choose for your child?
That being said Hogan will most likely beat Barstow for the district title next year. Hogan is the only other class 3 school that came within 6 points of beating Barstow this year until the state championship that is.
Hogan returns most of its roster next year.
The winner of that district has went onto the final 4 the last 9 years.

Haha you make me chuckle. You are very caught up on the private aspect of it - partially my fault. However, Hogan Prep recruits. Simple. "Which school would you choose?" How many people are there in KC and that many aren't choosing to go there because they are only class 3. Why? Because Hogan has the ability to turn people away. After reading your posts though this doesn't surprise me, after you compared Winston and Stanberry and said speed beats size when size doesn't play good team defense. (After checking, Stanberry gave up 38 points per game on the season and didn't give up more than 50 in any post season game. LOL)

Either way - You-Don't-Know-Me - I apologize for trying to give you some information about the NW region when you asked. One sentence in the middle of an entire dissertation and It has now spiraled to this. Ha Ha. I could definitely see Hogan being the favorite from the NW region though because they have been there before. Maryville was just my surprise team because they have experience coming back and a few talented freshman.

All that does not matter. I just hope Whitfield(barring they do not lose any players to bigger schools) and Tolton are on the opposite side of the brackets next season. Right now, those are my top 2 Class 3 teams next year.

hartville and mountain grove will both be good again and in the mix in class 2 and 3

Was really impressed with both of these teams at the tournament this year. Neither of them have much size, but they play some of the best team ball of anyone down there. Looked really good each day. Do you have any information on the 6'8 sophomore for Hartville that wasn't able to play?

He was a JV player this year. Not to be mean, but he has a lot to work on with his game if he expects to play at the varsity level especially with the style that Hartville plays. He just kind of takes up space right now.
