Dream comes true for Monett kicker

Laying in a hospital bed a year ago, the thought of playing college athletics seemed about as possible as the odds of winning the lottery for Monett kicker Cameron Cody.

The then-junior had multiple operations to fix a fluke injury to his knee after a kickoff against Lamar he would never forget.

Yet, time has a way to heal old wounds.

On Wednesday, Cody fulfilled a dream that back then seemed impossible, as he signed a national letter of intent to kick for the Moundbuilders of Southwestern College in Winfield, Kan.

“I didn’t think this was possible,” Cody said. “I didn’t play football my freshman and sophomore seasons. I played soccer. Then I broke my leg as a junior and really just played one year, and now I am college bound. It’s crazy.”

Cody hit 72 of 78 extra points this season for the Cub football team but showed his skill by routinely kicking to the ball into the end zone for touchbacks on kickoffs.

“He has a powerful leg,” said Derrek Uhl, Monett coach. “You think about it, he only has one year playing and he’s going to be real special. You watch his film and you can see how much pop he has on the ball. They haven’t seen anything yet. He’s still recovering. In a couple of years it will be interesting. He meant a lot to this team not just on the field, but showing the drive to come back and play.”

Cody said his plan is to spend as much time kicking as possible between now and the time he reports to summer workouts.

“I want to help them build a strong program,” Cody said. “I’ll be working to kick off the ground and just improve my skill.”

The Moundbuilders were the first school to talk to Cody about a possible college career and according to the senior, gave him an offer too good to pass up.

Cody plans to major in athletic training. He is the son of Rick and Michelle Cody.
