The Ste. Genevieve Dragons opened their season with a 41-25 victory over the visiting Dexter Bearcats. Leading the Dragons offensive charge junior quarterback Brendan Weiler put together an outstanding week, earning MOsports.com Class 3 Player of the Week honors and helping the Dragons move to 1-0 on the season.
Weiler connected on 31-of-54 passes for 421 yards, he connected for four touchdown passes. In the victory the Dragon offense produced 467-yards of total offense, compared to 347-yards of offense for Dexter. Weiler’s big night represented a bulk of that offense.
“Brendan of course is a big key to our offense as being the QB”, commented Ste. Genevieve head coach Bob Stolzer. “Like any other team’s quarterback, he’s the spark plug of our spread offense.”
At 5-foot-11 inches, 170-pounds in his junior season Weiler is an accomplished veteran varsity football player. As a sophomore, he passed for nearly 2,700 yards and ranked among the leaders in the Show-Me State in touchdown passes. Building on the experience of last season, Weiler started successfully in 2010.
“Brendan has aspirations to play on the collegiate level, but fortunately for us, he still has another season after this one to play for Ste. Genevieve”, added Stolzer. “Brendan passed for 2699 yards as a sophomore last season and has certainly gotten off to a great start this season and has a good receiving corp.
He spread his completions out to seven different receivers last Friday night. It’s a pleasure to see Brendan receive this recognition because he puts a lot of work in through the offseason in the weight room, camps, and any other helpful sources to make him a fundamentally sound quarterback.”
