CBC High School DC Wilcutt Gymnasium

CBC's gym offers 13,400-square-feet of space that is used for basketball, volleyball and competition wrestling, among other uses to support the school and students. Retractable bleachers seat 1,236 on the main level and 500 on the mezzanine. The mezzanine also has a retractable baseball batting cage.

The facility is named in honor of DC Wilcutt, a legendary coach, educator and administrator who spent 35-years at CBC. During his career, Coach Wilcutt compiled a record of 570 - 331 and led the Cadets to three state titles (1959, 1960, 1963.)

Under his leadership the Cadets gained a reputation as one of the most dominant prep basketball programs in the area. He is the winningest basketball coach in CBC’s history and was inducted into the Missouri Coaches’ Hall of Fame.

Coach Wilcutt is an Honorary Alumnus of CBC and has earned the designation as an Affiliated Christian Brother, one of the highest and most prestigious honors a lay person can receive from the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

Fort Zumwalt South--Brad Hill Memorial Gymnasium

Brad Hill was the first head coach of the Bulldogs and IIRC has the second-longest tenure of any boys basketball coach at FZS behind current head coach Bill Friedel.

Bishop DuBourg--Floyd Hacker Gymnasium

My memory may be fuzzy since it's been over 20 years since I taught there, but I believe Hacker was a long-time principal at DuBourg. His son Mark coached the Cavaliers to a state volleyball title in 1997.

Crystal City High School Arvel B Popp Gymnamsium

Arvel Popp was Bill Bradley’s basketball coach at Crystal City High School. He worked in virtually all sports at the high school before he retired as a coach in 1975 after 28 years with the Hornets.

He was one of the area’s winningest coaches at the time but always was associated with Crystal City’s 1961 basketball team. Led by Bradley, the small-town Hornets lost 52-51 to big-city St. Louis University High in the Missouri Class L championship game.

Bradley went on to the NCAA Final Four with Princeton, a National Basketball Association championship with the New York Knicks and became a U.S. Senator.

“Coach Arvel Popp played a major role in my life, and he is the only person I have ever called `Coach,’ ” Bradley said. “He was an inspiration as well as a teacher. Above all, he set high standards that all of us strive to measure up to. His impact on the entire community over many years was significant.”

My uncle played for Coach Popp and with Bradley. My grandpa was the scorekeeper for their basketball team. Always had a deep appreciation for Bradley.

Cool story about Popp Gymnasium...When they re-did the floor about 15 years ago they sanded it down to original wood. You could see the old key lines on the floor along with a V and H on the low block. I guess the old rules had alternating spots on free throws.

Glendale High School - Falcon Court

Not sure why, though. Sorry. The lower stage doors (used for storage and covered up by padding) has white letters saying 'Falcon Court' - Not sure when they were put there or why.

Coming up on 400 home wins. Standing at 398 right now. Had a 42-game home winning streak between '88 and '92.

Seating capacity of just 1,200. But we could get 2,200 in there before the new bleachers were installed in the summer of 1999. I've been told they had 2,600 for a Glendale-Kickapoo game in the '80's. Glendale-Parkview games were so big back in the '70's they caught people using ladders to try to get through the windows at the top of the gym.

University City HS Ed Crenshaw Gymnasium, Hasan Houston Court

Named in a 2012 ceremony, Crenshaw coached the University City High School basketball team from 1974 to 1997 and is tenth on the Missouri high school coaches list for wins. Houston was a three-sport letterman from the UCHS Class of 1976 who was drafted into the NBA by the Houston Rockets but played professional football for the Chicago Bears.

Scott County Central HS Ronnie Cookson Gymnasium

In the history of Missouri high school basketball no coach has matched the success Cookson had at Scott County Central. He led the Braves from 1970-1995, retired, then returned from 2007-2009. SCC crushed Missouri records with 15 state titles, one second-place, and one third-place finish. His overall record was 694-137 (83.5 winning percentage), and an incredible 28-2 mark in the state final four. Along with those came 20 district titles and 22 conference championships. He served as the assistant coach on the Braves state championship teams in 2010 and 20-11 (58-4). All this at a 1A public school (the smallest class) that had a reputation for playing all comers, no matter the size.

Cookson okayed the start of Scott Central’s girls basketball program in 1980, serving as their assistant coach from 1980-1995. During those 16 seasons the Bravettes made it to 13 Missouri Final Fours, capturing seven state championships, three 2nd’s, two 3rd’s, and one 4th.

Cookson was selected as the “Coach of the Year” five times by the Missouri Sportswriters Association and nine times by the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association.

Portageville HS Jim Bidewell Gymnasium

Under the guidance of head coach Jim Bidewell, the Portageville Bulldogs won five MSHSAA state championships and reached the Show-Me Showdown seven times. Bidewell earned a 542-170 record, guiding his teams to a pair of undefeated records (31-0) in 1991 and 1993. Bidewell was inducted into the MBCA Hall of Fame, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame leading his teams to 11 district titles, and 14 conference crowns.

Helias HS Rackers Fieldhouse

Jim Rackers began his teaching career at Helias High School in the fall of 1956. He taught world history, physical education and driver’s education. He was the head basketball and track coach and assistant football coach. He was the Athletic Director from 1966-1967 when he became Assistant Principal.

In 1971 Jim became the first lay principal at a Catholic secondary school in the State of Missouri. Jim was principal until 1992, when he became Helias’ first Chief Administrator. In 1997 he became the first Director of Development for Helias High School and Executive Director of the Helias Foundation. On May 1, 1998, the newly constructed field house on the Helias Campus was named the James L. Rackers Field House in honor of his years of dedication and loyalty to Helias High School.

Joplin High School Kaminsky Gymnasium

Russ Kaminksy ranks as one of the top high school basketball coaches in the nation and a giant among the coaching fraternity in the state of Missouri. Kaminsky compiled a basketball coaching record of 591-222. His coaching career began in 1942 in Mountain View, Missouri. Moving to Joplin in 1943, Kaminsky coached 33 years at Joplin High School and later at Parkwood High School.

Kaminksy played basketball for two seasons at Southwest Missouri State University (then known as the State Teachers College). As a football player in college he received All League honors three years in a row playing offensive end. During his senior year in 1940 he starred on an undefeated football team and received a Little All-American nomination.

As a high school football coach he posted in 99-59-9 record at Joplin High School from 1944-1961. However, it was as a basketb

My old high school gym, Lafayette CO C-1 aka Higginsville is now names after Jim Perrine, long time Basketball coach there and my social studies teacher in the 70s. He led a few teams to the State Final Four. I think 4th place was the best they did. Had a chance to visit with him at districts last year. He has told me the story of his coaching days in the early 1960s at tiny Malta Bend. He said he took his team to the Chillicothe Tournament a couple of years and did very good. He said his team had to play Chillicothe wish featured Jerry Parrish in the early 60s. Parrish STILL holds the single season scoring record at Chillicothe.
Chillicothe gym is not named after anyone at this point.

Bishop DuBourg--Floyd Hacker Gymnasium

Floyd Hacker started teaching and coaching at Bishop DuBourg High School at its founding in 1950. He retired 42 years later as a celebrated principal. DuBourg's current students still are taught by many of the teachers he hired during his long tenure as Principal.

Springfield Central - The Pit - James Ball Gym

I'm not sure when it was officially named "The Pit." The earliest reference to that name in the News-Leader was 1979. It was built in 1930-31.

It has its own twitter account: https://twitter.com/PitCentralHS

Jim Ball - From the "Lure and the Love of Basketball in Missouri" book; "Jim Ball started his coaching career at Versailles High School where he coached one of the great Missouri high school and college players in Bud Heineman. They went to the finals of the state tournament losing to Hall of Famer Tom Stanton's St. Louis Beaumont team. He spent the next four years at Sedalia Smith-Cotton High School. He then began coaching at Springfield Central and stayed there for thirty years. When he hung up his whistle he had posted a 603-326 mark. Although Jim is being inducted as a coach, he had a notable playing career at Camdenton High School where he led them to a state title. At Southwest Missouri State University he played on the Bears team that beat MU in the inaugural game that dedicated McDonald Arena on the SMSU campus."

Versailles ('45-'47) 63-10 (2nd in State in '47)
Smith-Cotton('47-'51) 75-29-1
Senior/Central('51-'81) 603-326 (4th in State in '61 & '62)

Joplin's Kaminsky Gym II has to be the best in Missouri. Not crazy about the Olympic style multi-colored seating, but it's VERY nice overall.
